Direction for determining the water depth with the aid of the sound echo.
consists in generating a sound signal near the surface of the sea,
that gets to the ground, is reflected there and one near the surface
attached recipient excited. The time is measured with suitable apparatus
which flows between the departure of the sound signal and the arrival of the echo. This time
can be a measure of the depth. in the
general it concerns
very short times, which are measured with special devices, so-called short-time meters,
be measured. In the known apparatus of this type, for. B. an easy to move
System set in motion when the sound is emitted and this motion occurs
the arrival of the echo at the receiver is stopped by applying a brake. The one covered
\ ileg is then a measure for the sound time and thus for the depth. whenever
a measurement is to be carried out, the apparatus must be operated by hand.
In contrast, the present invention has set itself the task of a permanent
To achieve display without the need for an operator.
The essence of the invention is that the sound output both
such as the release of the braking and return of the display system to the initial position
is effected automatically at certain intervals.
An exemplary embodiment of the invention is shown schematically in the drawing. A sound generator 2 is built into the side wall i of a ship on one side and a sound receiver 3 is built into the other side. As soon as a rotating contact disk 4 short-circuits brushes 6 and 7 with a contact segment 5, a push button relay 8 is actuated and switches the current coming from an alternating current machine 9 to the transmitter 2, so that a short sound signal is emitted. At the same time, the push button relay 8 closes the circuit of a battery io with the aid of a second contact, in which a display instrument ii (e.g. a moving coil instrument) is located. The pointer system of this instrument starts moving at the moment when the sound signal leaves the transmitter. The sound signal arrives on the path 12 to the seabed 13, is reflected there and arrives at the receiver 3. By exciting the receiver, an electromagnet 14 is excited, possibly with the interposition of an amplifier or relay 15, and pulls a lever arm or a spring 16 with a Brake shoe 17 on. This stops the movement of the pointer system ix. The pointer shows a specific value on a scale 18, which corresponds to the respective depth of the sea. In the meantime, the contact segment 5 of the disc 4 has reached the brushes ig, 2o and closes the circuit of a battery 21, whereby an electromagnet 22 is excited, which pulls the brake off the pointer system. This returns to its initial position and the entire apparatus is ready for a new sounding. This takes place as soon as the contact segment 5 connects the two brushes 6 and 7 again.
The process then repeats itself again in the same way. The intervals between the individual measurements are given by the rotation time of the contact disk 4 and can be regulated as desired, for example in such a way that a measurement is made every second. The brushes 6, 7 and 19, 2o can be moved against each other so that the time during which the measuring instrument displays the measured depth can be selected as long as desired. The rotation time of the disc 4 must of course be greater than the time it takes the sound to cover the distance from the transmitter to the receiver. The whole soldering apparatus is switched on by starting the motor or the clockwork which drives the contact disk 4. The advantages achieved by this device are evident. It is no longer necessary for an operator to take the measurements individually. The officer on the bridge of the ship can orientate himself at any time by looking at the display instrument about the respective depth. The invention is of course not limited to the particular embodiment described. It can be used wherever a water depth is measured with the help of the sound echo and so-called short-term meters.
