Description
Die Erfindung betrifft neue Polyhydroxyverbindungen, ein Ver
fahren zu ihrer Herstellung, bei dem man vernolsäurehaltige
Fettsäureester einer Epoxidringöffnung mit geeigneten Nuc
leophilen unterwirft sowie die Verwendung dieser Produkte zur
Herstellung von Polymeren.
Polyhydroxyverbindungen stellen wertvolle Ausgangsstoffe für
die Herstellung von Polymeren, beispielsweise Polyurethan
schäumen oder Gießharzen dar. Zu ihrer Herstellung kann man
beispielsweise von ungesättigten Triglyceriden oder Fettsäu
reniedrigalkylestern ausgehen, die zunächst epoxidiert und
dann einer Ringöffnung mit geeigneten Nucleophilen unterwor
fen werden. Eine Übersicht hierzu findet sich beispielsweise
in Fat. Sci. Technol. 89, 147 (1987). Polyole dieser Art, bei
spielsweise auf Basis von epoxidiertem Soja-, Rüb- oder Rici
nusöl, lassen sich problemlos mit Isocyanaten zu Polyuretha
nen umsetzen und erfüllen auch sonst höchste anwendungs
technische Anforderungen. Von Nachteil ist jedoch, daß zur
Herstellung dieser Produkte ein Epoxidationsschritt erfor
derlich ist, der mit großem technischen Aufwand und hohen
Anforderungen an die Arbeitssicherheit verbunden ist.
Die Aufgabe der Erfindung bestand nun darin, neue Polyhy
droxyverbindungen zur Verfügung zu stellen, die frei von den
geschilderten Nachteilen sind.
Gegenstand der Erfindung sind Polyhydroxyverbindungen, er
hältlich durch Epoxidringöffnung von vernolsäurehaltigen
Fettsäureestern mit Nucleophilen ausgesucht aus der Gruppe,
die von Wasserstoff, Wasser, Alkoholen und Carbonsäuren ge
bildet wird.
Der Erfindung liegt die Erkenntnis zugrunde, daß durch den
Einsatz von nativen Ölen, die an sich bereits eine hohe Kon
zentration an Fettsäuren mit Oxirangruppen und Doppelbin
dungen enthalten, der Epoxidationsschritt eingespart werden
kann. Nach Öffnung der Epoxidringe mit geeigneten Nucleo
philen werden Polyole erhalten, die sich leicht zu Polymeren
mit ausgezeichneten anwendungstechnischen Eigenschaften um
setzen lassen.
Ein weiterer Gegenstand der Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren
zur Herstellung von Polyhydroxyverbindungen, bei dem man
vernolsäurehattige Fettsäureester mit Nucleophilen ausgewählt
aus der Gruppe, die von Wasserstoff, Wasser, Alkoholen und
Carbonsäuren gebildet wird, einer Epoxidringöffnung unter
wirft.
Als vernolsäurehaltige Fettsäureester kommen vorzugsweise
Pflanzenöle der Vernonia galamensis und/oder Euphorbia la
gascae in Frage, die einen Gehalt an 12,13-Epoxyölsäure
(Vernolsäure) von 60 bis 80 Gew.-% aufweisen. Zu Herkunft und
Fettsäurezusammensetzung dieser Öle sei auf die Arbeiten von
Carlson in J. Am. Oil. Chem. Soc. 62, 934 (1965) und Gunstone in
The Lipid Handbook, Verlag Chaman + Hall, London, 52 (1986)
verwiesen.
Vernoniaöl zeichnet sich durch eine sehr regelmäßige Struktur
mit jeweils einer Oxirangruppe und einer Doppelbindung pro
Fettsäureeinheit aus. Im Gegensatz dazu ist die Verteilung
der Oxirangruppen und Doppelbindungen beispielsweise im
epoxidierten Sojaöl mehr oder minder regellos. Da die hohe
Symmetrie bei der Ringöffnung erhalten bleibt, zeichnen sich
auch die auf der Basis der neuen Polyhydroxyverbindungen er
haltenen Polymeren durch verbesserte, regelmäßigere Eigen
schaften aus.
Ein weiterer Gesichtspunkt besteht darin, daß Vernonia- und
Euphorbiatypen, aus deren Samen die vernolsäurereichen Aus
gangsstoffe gewonnen werden, ausgesprochen anspruchslos sind
und in Gegenden angebaut werden können, in denen andere Öl
saaten, wie beispielsweise Soja, Raps oder Ricinus, nicht
gedeihen. Die Substitution von Produkten auf Basis von epoxi
diertem Soja durch Polyole auf Vernolsäurebasis stellt so
mit nicht nur eine Vermehrung technischer Möglichkeiten dar,
sondern trägt auch dazu bei, wertvolle Anbaugebiete für
empfindlichere Pflanzensorten offenzuhalten, die für die
menschliche Ernährung benötigt werden.
Die Epoxidringöffnung der vernolsäurehaltigen Fettsäureester
mit geeigneten Nucleophilen kann in an sich bekannter Weise
erfolgen.
Bei Einsatz von Wasserstoff oder Wasser als Nucleophilen fin
det die Öffnung der Oxiranringe üblicherweise unter Druck
statt. Typische Reaktionsbedingungen sind Temperaturen von
150 bis 250, vorzugsweise 180 bis 220°C und Drücke von 1 bis
100, vorzugsweise 5 bis 50 bar. Die Ringöffnung der Epoxide
mit Alkoholen und/oder Fettsäuren erfolgt vorzugsweise druck
los in Gegenwart saurer Katalysatoren, wie beispielsweise
Schwefel- oder Phosphorsäure bei Temperaturen von 50 bis 200,
vorzugsweise 80 bis 180°C.
Neben Wasserstoff und Wasser kommen als Nucleophile Alkohole
der Formel (I) in Betracht,

in der R1 für einen aliphatischen Kohlenwasserstoffrest mit 1
bis 22 Kohlenstoffatomen steht. Typische Beispiele sind Etha
nol, Propanol, Butanol, Capronalkohol, Caprylalkohol, Caprin
alkohol, Laurylalkohol, Myristylalkohol, Cetylalkohol, Palm
oleylalkohol, Stearylalkohol, Isostearylalkohol, Oleylalko
hol, Elaidylalkohol, Petroselinylalkohol, Linolylalkohol,
Linolenylalkohol, Arachylalkohol, Gadoleylalkohol, Behenyl
alkohol und Erucylalkohol sowie deren technische Mischungen.
Vorzugsweise wird für die Ringöffnung jedoch Methanol einge
setzt.
Zur Epoxidringöffnung können als Nucleophile ferner auch Car
bonsäuren der Formel (II) eingesetzt werden,

in der R2CO für einen aliphatischen Acylrest mit 1 bis 22
Kohlenstoffatomen steht. Typische Beispiele sind Ameisensäu
re, Essigsäure, Propionsäure, Buttersäure, Capronsäure, Ca
prinsäure, Caprylsäure, Laurinsäure, Myristinsäure, Palmitin
säure, Palmoleinsäure, Stearinsäure, Iostearinsäure, Ölsäure,
Elaidinsäure, Petroselinsäure, Linolsäure, Linolensäure, Ara
chinsäure, Gadoleinsäure, Behensäure und Erucasäure sowie
deren technische Mischungen. Vorzugsweise werden technische
C8/10-Fettsäuregemische, sogenannte "Vorlauf-Fettsäuren" so
wie Kokos- und Talgfettsäuren eingesetzt.
Die vernolsäurereichen Fettsäureester und die Nucleophile
können in einem - bezogen auf den Epoxidgehalt - molaren
Einsatzverhältnis von 1 : 0,2 bis 1 : 5, vorzugsweise 1 : 0,8
bis 1 : 3 eingesetzt werden. Dies bedeutet, daß die Erfindung
nicht nur Polyhydroxyverbindungen umfaßt, bei denen die Ring
öffnung vollständig abgelaufen ist, sondern auch solche Stof
fe, die neben Hydroxygruppen und Doppelbindungen noch einen
gewissen Prozentsatz, beispielsweise 10 bis 50% der im Aus
gangsmaterial enthaltenen Epoxidgruppen aufweisen können. Die
Epoxidringöffnung kann somit bis zu einem Restepoxidgehalt
von 0 bis 3,6, vorzugsweise 0 bis 1,2 Gew.-% - bezogen auf
die resultierende Polyhydroxyverbindung - durchgeführt werden.
Wird die Epoxidringöffnung mit einem Überschuß des Nucleo
phils durchgeführt, empfiehlt es sich, nichtumgesetzte Aus
gangsstoffe durch Destillation gegebenenfalls im Vakuum ab
zutrennen, bevor die Polyhydroxyverbindungen weiterverarbei
tet werden.
Die nach dem erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren erhältlichen Poly
hydroxyverbindungen eignen sich als Rohstoffe zur Herstellung
von Polymeren. Sie können beispielsweise in Alkydharze sowohl
über die Hydroxylfunktionen als auch über noch im Molekül
befindliche Epoxidgruppen einkondensiert werden und stellen
mehrfunktionelle Polykondensationsbausteine dar, wie sie
insbesondere für die Entwicklung von Polyurethanschäumen von
Wichtigkeit sind.
Ein weiterer Gegenstand der Erfindung betrifft daher die
Verwendung der nach dem erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren erhält
lichen Polyhydroxyverbindungen zur Herstellung von Polymeren,
in denen sie zu 1 bis 90, vorzugsweise 10 bis 70 Gew.-% -
bezogen auf die Polymeren - enthalten sein können.
Die folgenden Beispiele sollen den Gegenstand der Erfindung
näher erläutern, ohne ihn darauf einzuschränken.

Druckspaltung von Vernoniaöl. In einem 500-ml-Autoklaven wur
den 100 g (0,24 mol, bezogen auf Epoxidsauerstoffgehalt) Ver
noniaöl vorgelegt und 6 h bei 200°C mit 1 bis 4 g Wasser ei
ner Ringöffnung unterworfen. Der Anfangsdruck betrug 25 bar
und stieg bis zum Ende der Reaktion auf 38 bar an.
Einzelheiten zu den resultierenden Produkten sind in Tab. 1
zusammengefaßt:
Ringöffnung von Vernoniaöl mit Methanol. In einem 500-ml-
Dreihalskolben mit Rührer, Tropftrichter und Rückflußkühler
wurde eine Mischung von 2 g konz. Schwefelsäure und 96 g (3
mol) Methanol vorgelegt und bis zum Rückfluß erhitzt. An
schließend wurden unter intensivem Kühlen 421 g (1 mol, be
zogen auf Epoxidsauerstoffgehalt) Vernoniaöl zugetropft. Nach
beendeter Epoxid-Zugabe wurde das Reaktionsgemisch mit Di
ethanolamin neutralisiert und das überschüssige Methanol im
Vakuum entfernt.

Ringöffnung von Vernoniaöl mit Vorlauf-Fettsäure. In einem
500-ml-Dreihalskolben mit Rührer und Rückflußkühler wurden
155 g (1,05 mol) eines technischen Fettsäuregemisches (60
Gew.-% Caprylsäure, 40 Gew.-% Caprinsäure, SZ = 380) vorge
legt, unter Rühren auf 160°C erhitzt und innerhalb von 30 min
mit 421 g (1 Mol, bezogen auf Epoxidsauerstoffgehalt) Verno
niaöl versetzt. Nach beendeter Epoxid-Zugabe wurde die Tem
peratur langsam auf 170°C erhöht und 8 h (Epoxidsauerstoffge
halt im Produkt (0,25 Gew.-%) gerührt. Anschließend wurde
nichtumgesetzte Fettsäure bei 200°C/0,02 bar abdestilliert.

20 g des Polyols aus Beispiel 1 bzw. des Polyols aus Beispiel
6 wurden in Gegenwart von 1 Tropfen des Katalysators Form
rez(R) UL 24 mit 7,9 g bzw. 4,6 g 4,4′-Methylendi(phenyliso
cyanat) umgesetzt. Die resultierende Polyurethane zeigten ei
ne Shore A-Härte von 93 bzw. 50.
Claims (10)
1. Polyhydroxyverbindungen, erhältlich durch Epoxidring
öffnung von vernolsäurehaltigen Fettsäureestern mit
Nucleophilen ausgesucht aus der Gruppe, die von Wasser
stoff, Wasser, Alkoholen und Carbonsäuren gebildet wird.
2. Verfahren zur Herstellung von Polyhydroxyverbindungen,
bei dem man vernolsäurehaltige Fettsäureester mit Was
serstoff, Wasser, Alkoholen und Carbonsäuren einer
Epoxidringöffnung unterwirft.
3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
man als vernolsäurehaltige Fettsäureester Pflanzenöle
der Vernonia galamensis und/oder Euphorbia lagascae
einsetzt.
4. Verfahren nach Anspruch 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
man die Ringöffnung mit Wasserstoff und/oder Wasser bei
einer Temperatur von 150 bis 250°C und einem Druck von 1
bis 100 bar durchführt.
5. Verfahren nach Anspruch 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
man die Ringöffnung mit Alkoholen und/oder Fettsäuren in
Gegenwart saurer Katalysatoren bei 50 bis 200°C durch
führt.
6. Verfahren nach Anspruch 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
man zur Ringöffnung Alkohole der Formel (I) einsetzt,
R1(OH) (I)in der R1 für einen aliphatischen Kohlenwasserstoffrest
mit 1 bis 22 Kohlenstoffatomen steht.
7. Verfahren nach Anspruch 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
man zur Ringöffnung Carbonsäuren der Formel (II) ein
setzt,
R2CO-OH (II)in der R2CO für einen aliphatischen Acylrest mit 1 bis
22 Kohlenstoffatomen steht.
8. Verfahren nach Anspruch 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
man die vernolsäurereichen Fettsäureester und die
Nucleophile in einem - bezogen auf den Epoxidgehalt -
molaren Einsatzverhältnis von 1 : 0,2 bis 1 : 5 ein
setzt.
9. Verfahren nach Anspruch 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
man die Epoxidringöffnung bis zu einem Restepoxidgehalt
von 0 bis 3,6 Gew.-% - bezogen auf die resultierende
Polyhydroxyverbindung - durchführt.
10. Verwendung von Polyhydroxyverbindungen nach Anspruch 1
zur Herstellung von Polymeren.
