Description
The invention relates to sedimentation-stable, magneto dilated suspensions and their use.
V. I. Kordonsky et al., J. Magnetism and Magnetic Materials 85 (1990) 114-120). 33 (2), 329-366 (1989) diskutiert. Magnetorheological fluids and suspensions, d. H. Liquids and suspensions, the viscosity of which by the Effect of an external magnetic field is adjustable known (including V. I. Kordonsky et al., J. Magnetism and Magnetic Materials 85 (1990) 114-120). These systems point however a pseudoplastic, d. H. shear thinning or a Newtonian flow behavior. On the other hand, too Systems have been described that use the so-called dilatante Show flow behavior. (E. J. W. Verwey et al., Rec. Trav. Chim. 57 (1939) 383 to 389). Below is one in certain shear rate ranges at increasing viscosity shear rate increase refers to how Verwey uses oil in suspensions acid-coated carbonyl iron powder with a medium Diameter of 3 µm in inert organic liquids found. However, the suspensions constructed in this way have as a major disadvantage that after a short time sediment and lead to a solid sediment. The the Dilatant behavior influencing parameters were from H. A. Barnes in J. Rheol. 33 (2), 329-366 (1989). For example, the dependence of the critical Shear rate, that is the upper shear rate half of which the viscosity increases from the particle size or shown by the solvent viscosity.
A disadvantage of the known dilatant suspensions however, that they are either not stable to sedimentation or their viscosity by applying an external magnetic field cannot be influenced within wide limits.
The task was therefore to ensure sedimentation-stable di to provide latent suspensions, which the named Do not have disadvantages and in particular by one of independent parameters of the respective suspension can be.
It has now been found that sedimentation-stable Dispersions consisting essentially of magnetic Particles with a particle size of less than 1 µm, one dispersing substance and a solvent with a Boiling point of at least 100 ° C, a magnetorheological Effect, measured in a magnetic field of 100 kA / m, from show at least 500 Pa and show dilated flow behavior point.
Suspensions are referred to as dilatants in the sense of the invention, in which the quotient dlnη / dlnγ exceeds the value of 0.3 without the action of an external magnetic field in at least a partial range of the shear rate interval from 0.1 to 100,000 s -1 , whereby η is the shear viscosity and γ is the shear rate.
The suspensions according to the invention contain the magnetic particles with a volume fraction of at least 10, preferably at least 15% and up to 80% by volume, a range between 20 and 65% by volume being particularly advantageous. The volume of the magnetic particles used is the total volume, which means that the layer of dispersing substance must also be added to the respective particle. Suitable magnetic particles for the suspensions according to the invention with an average particle size of less than 1 μm, usually with a particle size of 10 to 100 nm, are preferably those with a high specific saturation magnetization. Preferred substance classes are superparamagnetic iron oxides such as Fe 3 O 4 , γ-Fe 2 O 3 , Berthollide and in particular the cubic ferrites of the composition M v Mn w Zn x Fe y O z described in US Pat. No. 4,810,401.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the magnetodilatant suspensions magnetic particles that are in the Meaning of a core-shell arrangement only partially from the magnetic substance exist. Come into question here for example systems in which only the shell made of magnetic Material consists of an inorganic or orga niche core was noticed. Part of the magnetic particles in compliance with the intended Volume fill level by adding non-magnetic Replace particles. In this context, then also hard magnetic particles of this size pull. Particularly suitable non-magnetic admixtures pigments are those that themselves form dilated suspensions can be processed, such as that in the DE-A 30 25 562 described latex particles. While the Magnetic particle size always smaller than Is 1 µm, the particle size of the non-magnetic pigment admixtures are 2 nm to 200 µm.
These magnetic particles or mixtures containing them Particles are in the magnetodilatants according to the invention Suspensions coated with polyelectrolytes. The poly Electrolytes do not only create a suitable steric Stabilization but also an increase in surfaces charge of the solid particles. The essential is here pH through which the rheological properties of the Suspension are affected. By varying the pH can determine the carrier concentration in the polyelectrolyte and the volume of the adsorbate layer in a suitable manner can be set. When using anionic polyelectro it turned out to be useful that the pH value is greater than its acid constant (pKa value), while in the case of cationic polyelectrolytes the pH value prevails is preferably less than the pKa value. Let continue the flow properties by adjusting the ionic strength influence favorably. A variety of poly is suitable electrolytes with a molecular weight between 500 and 250,000. These polymers preferably have 5 to 1000 charges in the molecular framework. Poly are particularly suitable electrolytes from the group of polyacrylate, acrylic acid, acrylic acid / acrylamide copolymers, modified polyacrylates, Phosphonomethylated polycarboxylates, polyvinylphosphon acids, polyvinylphoric acids, polyamines, polyvinylamines, Polysulfonic acids, polyphosphoric acids. With the polyacrylates has a pH range between 2 and 12 as special proven in part. Except for the polyelectrolytes mentioned can also be ligands which the Ober Increase area charge, insert.
The in the magnetodilatant suspensions according to the invention contained solvents can be polar or non-polar, water is also suitable. Particularly suitable solution middle are ethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol and their mixtures. The polarity can be determined by both Choice of another solvent can be varied as well by mixing different solvents be put. The viscosity of the is expediently Solvent (mixture) at 25 ° C in the range of 1 to 10,000 mPa · s, preferably from 1 to 1000 mPa · s. If magneto dilatant suspensions are made in water a certain surface charge of the magnetizable Particles by choosing the appropriate pH in the range of 2 to 12, preferably from 5 to 11.
The magnetodilatant suspensions according to the invention remain almost un because of the extremely low sedimentation tendency limited flow. Your dilated flow behavior and the Possibility of reversible viscosity by an external Magnetic field are properties that affect this Make suspensions useful for numerous applications. These magnetodilatants are particularly suitable Suspensions for controllable damping of vibrations and Movements within shorter time intervals, such as e.g. B. with shock absorbers, engine vibration dampers, and also Couplings. Magnetodilatant suspensions are also suitable for controlling forces and movement sequences in cars mobile auxiliary units such as air conditioners, alternators, Power steering, motion or acceleration sensors, Small engine clutches. Possible applications arise vibration dampening of washing machines, Centrifuges, sensitive electronic devices and Acceleration of weighing processes.
The BET surface area measured in the following examples was carried out according to DIN 66 132 using a Ströhlein Areameter from the company Ströhlein, Düsseldorf, after the one-point Difference method measured according to Haul and Dümbgen. The Magnetic properties were determined in one Vibration magnetometer in an external magnetic field of 400 kA / m performed. The viscosity measurements as well as the determination of the magnetorheological effect were compared with a Couette rheometer (CRM) with switchable magnetic field from 100 kA / m carried out at room temperature.
The test sample is located in the gap between a cylindrical, fixed iron stator 1 with the radius R 1 and a polyamide cup 2 rotating at the angular velocity Ω with the inner radius R 2 . The torque M acting on the stator is measured. If H is the height of the stator, the wall shear stress τ on the stator follows in the field-free case
Erhöht sich unter dem Einfluß eines senkrecht zur Scherebene stehenden Magnet feldes die bei konstant gehaltener Schergeschwindigkeit ge messene Schubspannung vom feldfreien Wert τ auf den Wert τM=τ+Δ τM, so führt dies bei der in Fig. 1 gezeigten Geometrie zu einer Erhöhung des Drehmomentes vom Wert M auf MM:Due to the geometry of the pole pieces 3 and 3 ', only parts of the sample are within the two sectors with the angle α (in rad) in the magnetic field. If, under the influence of a magnetic field perpendicular to the shear plane, the shear stress measured at a constant shear rate increases from the field-free value τ to the value τ M = τ + Δ τ M , this leads to an increase in the geometry shown in FIG. 1 of the torque from the value M to M M :
MM/M=1+(α/π) (ΔτM/τ).M M / M = 1 + (α / π) (Δτ M / τ).
Der magnetorheologische Effekt folgt aus dem Drehmomentver hältnis zuThe magnetorheological effect follows from the torque ver relationship too
ΔτM/τ=(MM/M-1)/(α/π). Δτ M / τ = (M M / M-1) / (α / π).
