Abstract

Synthetic active carbon is prepd. by introducing a fine pored form of the carbon into the coarse pores of an inert matrix material. The matrix is e.g. of a mixt. of clay, gypsum, porous silicates, fuller's earth, natural or synthetic zeolites with montmorrilonites in a ratio of 10-70%. Pref. the mixt. is formed into spheres or granules and activated by heating to 700 deg.C under an inert atmos. USE/ADVANTAGE - Prods. have better abrasion resistance than conventional active carbon. Esp. useful for purificn. of drinking water e.g. to remove contaminants e.g. toxic concns. of Pb, Cd and Hg and other adsorbable materials e.g. pesticides and dyes and inorganic materials e.g. heavy metals and radioactive elements.

Description

The use of fine-pored forms of carbon within the Coarse pores of an inert matrix have already been described in patent application P 39 19 567.8 described. It has now been found that the coarse pore inert matrix is made up of mixtures of bleaching earth, zeolites (natural or synthetic), with clay, plaster, porous Silicates or coarse-pored charcoal, hard coal, porous plastics of any kind, or any kind of soot can exist. Significant improvements in the adsorption power of such Artificial active coal has been found. In the case of mixtures of zeolites z. B. additional ion exchange properties are present. The invention is therefore the Task, the removal not only of adsorbable substances from water, but also the adsorption of inorganic poisons, such as. B. heavy metals or radioactive elements.

Nachfolgend ein Beispiel eines LaboransatzesBelow is an example of a laboratory approach

Moistened clay (50 g) was treated with 3 g of carbon black and 10 g of synthetic zeolite, such as. B. "Wessalith P" from Degussa. From this mass, beads or Shaped granules. After combustion at 700 ° Celsius in a nitrogen atmosphere, one obtains the desired material, which is abrasion-resistant and therefore more suitable than ordinary Activated carbon is. The material removes e.g. B. toxic concentrations of lead, cadmium and Mercury from drinking water. There was also a decrease in the hardness of the water observed. Pesticides and other adsorbable substances, as well as dyes, have also been basically removed.
