Abstract

The knee restraint is mounted under the dashboard of the passenger side, or the driver's position, and does not impede access to that seat. The integral gas generator (11) is fitted onto the mounting plate, while a folded airbag (21) is held in the cover. The support has thin sides of corrugated metal, which are extended by the gas before the airbag is inflated. The airbag is inflated via holes (19) of controlled size in the outer plate (15) of the support, and under the folded airbag. When the peak pressure has passed, air leaks out of the airbag, leaving the extended support over the knees. USE/ADVANTAGE - Knee restraint airbag in vehicle prevents seat occupant sliding under dashboard, and has compact mounting.

Description

The invention relates to a restraint system for the knees of a driver or passenger in one force Vehicle according to the preamble of patent claim 1.

From DE-PS 26 06 640 is in the impact area Deforma arranged by driver and front passenger tion member known, which is considered to be approximately perpendicular ner longitudinal axis acted upon corrugated tube is. In the corrugated tube when one is triggered on agreed criteria appropriate sensor an overpressure built up. This overpressure can be used by who to fill a gas bag on the passenger side len, which inflates towards the headspace and catches the chest and head area of the passenger. To transfer the propellant gas from the corrugated pipe into the the gas bag that adjoins at an angle are in the corresponding wall of the corrugated tube openings intended.

The invention has for its object a back system for the knees of a driver or front passenger in train a motor vehicle so that it is not use little space and the legroom not affected, but already activated when activated very early on the knees of the occupant acts so that a relatively long way to Energieum change remains.

The task is characterized by the characteristics of the Claim 1 solved.

The deformation element is folded up by a th sheet metal hollow body formed by overpressure reaches its active position. Thus, at Nonge take up little space; in the activated Zu however, a deformation element was available which affects the impact energy over a long distance the knee can convert. In the from the DE-PS 26 06 640 known deformation member is the inside pressure of the hollow sheet forming the deformation member pers increased, the available verfor path remains the same. With the proposed The deformation path, on the other hand, becomes the deformation path increases and at the same time the distance between the Deformation element and the knees reduced, which the knee restraint system takes effect earlier can and the "immersion" of the occupant to be protected can be prevented better.

The new restraint system is also on the Knees of the inmate facing wall of the sheet metal hollow body openings are provided over which the adjoining gas bag can be filled. In contrast the gas bag serves as the well-known restraint system not inflated towards the headspace to become the occupant's chest and head area field, but around on the knees of the occupant to act. This will protect the knees from being protected Inmates already held back before a pre-publisher tion takes place.

With passive security systems, for example a self-applying, diagonally running safe seat belt or a passenger airbag, the pro kicks in blem that the safety device only on the Chest area and therefore the body down  dives away (so-called "submarining effect"). To ver this prevent, so-called knee catchers have been developed, which in Connection with the passive safety systems mentioned men are installed. This is the case with the knee pads Problem that they are very close to the knees of the occupant should be arranged to the immersion effect prevent. This requirement is contrary to the Demand for sufficient legroom, which a knee arrangement of the knee requires a knee. Around To meet both of these requirements, one also has the freedom pillow is considering what is the greatest possible legroom allow and on the other hand already at the beginning of the previous ver act on the occupant's knees during the positioning phase. Among other things, such facilities have not proven because the occupant's knees are high Apply surface pressure to the air cushion and only slightly Energy is convertible. In practice, half such knee catchers prevailed, which mainly are formed from deformable sheet metal supports.

The new restraint system ensures that that acts on the knees of the occupant to be protected gas bag at the earliest possible time Knees are restrained to the unwanted bottom to avoid diving. In the second phase, through the hollow sheet metal body of the new restraint system Deformation member for converting the impact energy created, which compared to the known solutions requires less installation space and still a larger one Deformation path guaranteed.

Instead of the inflatable airbag, another one res inflatable element. Such one Element can be vacuumed in, for example Foil welded foam exist. If through now  the openings in the knees facing the occupant Wall of the hollow hollow body vacuum a gas added leads, then the volume of the foam becomes strong enlarged and an effective shock cushion created. There in this configuration, the safe when not in use no gas can be supplied to the foam on the other hand, however, the foam over the openings must be in communication with the sheet metal hollow body it is necessary that the folded sheet metal hollow body is also airtight.

With regard to the formation of the hollow sheet metal body, it is advantageous if it is at least at its circumference two opposite sides at least one fold has, the base plate of the hollow sheet metal body Gas generator carries and the opening for filling the Wall of the sheet metal hollow body of the gas bag Base plate is opposite. Depending on the one you want Deformation path for the hollow sheet metal can this with different folds can be formed. The Sheet thickness of the hollow sheet metal essentially determines chen the energy absorption capacity. The openings on the wall of the sheet metal facing the knees of the occupant hollow body are to be matched to the volume of the Gas bags and on what energy to separate folding the sheet metal hollow body is required. Are the Cross sections of the openings selected too large, then this means that only the gas bag is inflated is, but not an unfolding of the sheet hollow body enters.

It is particularly advantageous if the restraint system forms a self-supporting, pre-assembled assembly, which by on the base plate of the hollow sheet metal body arranged holding devices on a cross member in Dashboard area of the motor vehicle attachable  is. This allows the restraint system on one Complete the sub-band or an extension so that on the final assembly line only little time for installing the Restraint system is necessary. This fact is particularly important if both vehicles with the restraint system, as well as vehicles without a sol ches can be built alternately, because the assembly time for the most extensive equipment the cycle time be Right.

Holders are on the base plate of the hollow sheet metal body directions provided for the entire unit, with which you can quickly and reliably on a cross member can be fastened in the dashboard area. The cross beam ger directs those acting on the sheet metal hollow body Forces on the vehicle body.

An interior of a passenger vehicle, shown schematically in FIG. 1, is provided with a dashboard 5 , which accommodates a rear holding system 7 in its lower region. The restraint system 7 is used to prevent the body of the occupant to be protected from diving downwards in the event of a front impact in conjunction with a passive safety system, such as a self-applying two-point belt or a passenger airbag (submarining effect).

The restraint system 7 shown in more detail in the starting position in FIG. 2 comprises a hollow sheet metal body identified by the reference number 9 . This is composed of a base plate 13 receiving a gas generator 11 , a wall 15 lying opposite the base plate 13 and a bellows 17 made of sheet metal and connecting both components.

A plurality of openings 19 are formed on the wall 15 , which lies opposite the knees of the occupant when the restraint system 7 is installed. In the edge region of the wall 15 , an airbag 21 is fastened, which is folded together in the rest position shown in FIG. 2 and is covered with a protective cover 23 .

The complete preassembled restraint system 7 can be fastened with means arranged on its base plate 13 holder 25 on a cross member 27 ( FIG. 1) in a simple manner. In addition to attaching this complete assembly, only the gas generator 11 must be connected via its connecting cable 29 .

Fig. 3 shows the restraint system when it is activated, ie the gas generator 11 has been ignited by a sensor (not shown) responding to certain criteria.

By gas pressure, the best existing bellows 17 of the sheet metal hollow body 9 is pulled apart by expansion of the folds. The wall 15 thereby moves away from the base plate 13 of the sheet metal hollow body 9 . The openings 19 in the wall 15 are designed so that a sufficiently large pressure, which pulls the bellows 17 apart, is built up and only then is so much gas pressed into the bellows 21 adjoining the wall 15 that the gas bag 21 inflates. Only when this has been done does the pressure drop by the gas escaping through the fabric of the gas bag 21 or special openings in the gas bag 21 . If a gas-tight gas bag is used, other outflow openings or a space membrane reacting at a predetermined value are to be seen in a manner known per se.

In the activated state, the airbag 21 acts on the knees of the occupants and thereby prevents them from submerging in the front seat. In the further movement, however, the airbag 21 is compressed by the knees until the knees come into contact with the wall 15 of the hollow sheet metal body 9 . The sheet metal hollow body 9 acts as a deformation element in that the impact energy is converted into deformation energy by the bellows 17 .
