Description
Process for the extraction of metallic manganese by electrolysis of the aqueous solutions of manganese salts. It has been known since the work of Bunsen that from the aqueous solutions of the manganese salts during electrolysis at the cathode Precipitation can be obtained, provided the experimental conditions are chosen correctly contain metallic manganese. However, one has not yet done this technically able to extract manganese because the precipitates are always oxide-containing and as a result, in poorly adhering powdery form are deposited. The only hitherto known method of obtaining a pure manganese from aqueous solution consists in that one uses a mercury cathode and that obtained by electrolysis Manganese amalgan freed from mercury by distillation with exclusion of air. at This process gives a finely crystallized powder of metallic manganese.
Experiments that were carried out for the purpose of obtaining compact sheets from pure manganese by electrolysis of aqueous manganese salt solutions gave the following, for. If neutral aqueous solutions of manganese salts were subjected to electrolysis, it was not possible to obtain pure manganese. B. in the electrolysis of a solution that q. Mol. Manganese chlorine contained per liter, with a current density of 0.2 Amp./qcm of about 50 percent metallic manganese and about 50 percent manganese oxide.
If acid was added to the solution to be electrolyzed, it rose the metallic manganese content of the precipitate; but it also succeeded in this Do not know how to obtain deposits that are completely free of oxide and in Form of compact sheets can be obtained.
It has now been found that oxide-free precipitates of pure metallic Manganese can be obtained in the form of compact sheet metal if the to be electrolyzed Solution ammonium salts are added. This can be achieved that at the Cathode the deposition of manganese oxide or manganese hydroxide is avoided and, if pure solutions are subjected to electrolysis, chemically at the cathode pure metal is obtained in compact form.
Example: From a solution containing 3 to 3.5 moles of manganese chloride, r to 2 mol. Chlorammonium and 0.05 to 0.05 mol. Hydrochloric acid contained in the liter, was at Compact and oxide-free metallic manganese obtained at room temperature. The addition acid is not absolutely necessary. B. from a manganese acetate solution, to which ammonium acetate was added, oxide-free metallic manganese was also obtained.
