Abstract
The invention concerns a process for decontaminating soil which has been contaminated with hydro-carbons, oil or heavy metal. The contaminated soil is fed to a screen which removes stones and scrap metal. The remaining contaminated material is fed into a rotating drum which has a screen at its outlet which allows the finer particles to fall onto a vibrating screen. As the material is being screened it is mixed with water and separated into fine and coarse fractions. The coarse fraction is thus decontaminated and is removed. The sludge which is removed from the finer fraction contains concentrated contaminated material and is disposed of in an appropriate manner whilst the residue of the finer fraction is thus decontaminated.
