Abstract

The braking device (3) has a pair of opposing braking elements (4,5) positioned on opposite sides of the wire (1) in the wire feed path. At least one brake element (4,5) can be displaced relative to the other and is coupled to a drive which is controlled via a sensor (24) for the wire tension. Pref. each braking element (4,5) uses an endless brake band (6,7) fed in a straight path between a pair of spaced deflection rollers (8,9;10,11) the 2 bands (6,7) displaced towards one another via a pair of operating plates (13,14) under control of an electromagnetic drive. Each brake band (6,7) pref. has a felt braking layer on the side facing the wire (1).
