Abstract
Mercury electrodeposition comprises reacting an electrolyte contg. suspended Hg2Cl2 with Cl2 to oxidise the Hg2Cl2 to soluble HgCl2, which is then cathodically reduced to liq. Hg while Cl2 is evolved at the anode. The novelty is the use of an electrolysis cell allowing unhindered migration of the Cl2 evolved at the anode into the cathodic region of the cell to obtain in situ oxidn. of the Hg2Cl2 to soluble HgCl2.
