Fire protection covering for steel girders of steel constructions which is formed by at least one layer of gypsum plaster which covers the girder or structural member to be protected and is held on said girders or structural members in such a way as to keep cavities free, the covering having at least one further encasing layer of gypsum plaster which is held by spacers at a distance from the first- mentioned encasing layer in such a way as to keep closed cavities (5) free, the cavitites formed between the girder (1, 8) or structural member and the first encasing layer (3') and between the latter and the further encasing layer (7') being closed so as to be gas tight per se.
