Abstract

It has hitherto only been possible to offer programmes for foreign language instruction, therapeutic language instruction and general speech education in a limited way or not at all by machine means because it has not been possible adequately to analyse, correct and treat the most important component, the acoustic one. By including digital voice recording in a computer-controlled interactive video system, the direct, visually displayed comparison between student performance and model is made possible, as is the automatic indication of the correct form. The system provides the student with the possibility of checking, not only acoustically but also visually, to see how his own performance converges on the model with repeated practising which, for example for those hard of hearing but also for speakers of a source language having a completely different tonal system than that of the target language, means the only possible control.
