Netzknotenrechner (Front-End-Rechner FE) zur Vernetzung von Mikrorechnern, Minirechnern, Terminals und anderen Daten-End-Geräten (DEE), dadurch gekennzeichnet, 1. daß in jedem FE die Netzknotenfunktion fUr alle an diesen FE angeschlossenen DEE bereitgestellt ist, 2. daß der FE in Hard- und Software modular ausgebildet ist, wobei 2.1. der FE durch entsprechende Steckmoduln an beliebige anzuschließende DEE-Konfigurationen anpaßbar ist, 2.2. der FE durch entsprechende Steckmoduln an beliebige Netztopologien, insbesondere Ring, Bus, Stern oder Masche anpaßbar ist und 2.3. der FE durch entsprechende Steckmoduln an unterschiedliche Übertragungsmedien, insbesondere Mehrdrahtleitungen, Koaxialkabel oder Lichtleiter anpaßbar ist, 3. und daß weiterhin die unteren Protokollfunktionen, insbesondere die unteren sechs Ebenen des IS0-Schich- tenmodells in den FE verlagert sind.
