Abstract

1. Underground interim store for spent nuclear reactor fuel elements and for vitrified radioactive waste, with storage buildings arranged in a cavern, in which buildings are provided cooled storage modules or storage regions for accommodating the fuel elements and the vitrified radioactive waste, characterised in that the cavern (8, 10) has, in cross-section, the form of a vertical ellipse with an upright major axis and presents a farreaching re-arrangement of the rock burden or loads and also an activated rock-supporting ring.
