Abstract
The process consists of (a) covering the metal to be etched with a protective layer; (b) numbering the area(s) to be etched to define valves of the x, y co-ordinates of their perimeter(s); (c) automatically scoring the metal and coating with a scoring tool which cuts through the coating along the perimeters defined by the x, y co-ordinates; (d) removing the coating from the area(s) to be etched; and (e) immersing the partly-coated metal in an etching soln. for a predetermined period to remove a predetermined amt. of metal from the uncoated area(s). The metal is aluminium or its alloys, or titanium or its alloys, the etching bath is an alkali metal hydroxide or halogen acid, and the protective layer is a butadiene-styrene copolymer.
