Well treating fluids are diverted to less permeable zones of underground formations by pumping into the well a compsn. comprising (i) a carried fluid (I) and (ii) 0.01-2 lbs/gal graded phthalimide particles (II) in the particle size range 4-200 mesh (US sieve). (I) is suitably the well treating fluid. Also claimed is the use of the above compsn. as a fluid loss additive to well treating fluids. The graded particles bridge across an opening and seal the formation sufficiently to divert the treatment fluid. They also act as a fluid loss control additive, are stable in acidic solns. and are easily removed from the formation after the treatment.
