Abstract

Agents for agglomerating rubber latices are dispersions of particles consisting of (A) 5-50 wt.% shell material grafted to (B) core material. (A) comprises copolymers of 80-99.5 (esp. 90-95) wt.% 1-4C alkyl acrylates (I) and 3-8C unsatd. mono or di-carboxylic acids, esp. of formula R2C = C(R')COOH, where each R is independently H or COOH; R' is R or 1-4C alkyl. (B) is an elastomer free of (I), esp. copolymers of butadiene with styrene and/or acrylonitrile. More esp. (I) is ethyl acrylate and (II) is methacrylic acid and the agents are suitable for agglomerating latices which are at least 95% polymerised. The agents do not introduce undesirable contaminants. They produce agglomerates with polydispersed particle size distribution which are excellent rigid polymer modifiers and reinforcing agents.
