Abstract

Prodn. of shaped PTFE articles comprises (a) introducing PTFE granules into a high intensity mixer comprising an enclosed vessel having a number of blades rotatable on arms about a central axis; (b) rotating the blades at a tip speed of at least 30 metres/sec. so that the PTFE granules are subjected to intense mixing and thermokinetic heating action of the rotating blades until the granules become heated to a predetermined discharge temp. of above 370 deg.C; (c) discharging the granules at the discharge temp. and (d) forming the discharged particles into an article to desired shape at or below the discharge temp. and (e) cooling the shaped article. Pref. the blade tip speed is ca. 35 m/s, the discharge temp. is ca. 450 deg.C and the time period for the mixing and heating stage is 80-120 sec; or the blade tip speed is 40 m/sec, the discharge temp. is 475-480 deg.C and the heating and mixing period is 60-80 sec. Pigments and/or other additives may be incorporated into the PTFE during the heating/mixing stage. Used for forming a coating layer on a substrate by pressing, for making PTFE sheets, for forming billets which are cooled to a temp. suitable for forming a finished article by direct stamping or forging; for direct input to a compression moulding stage; or for extrusion in a ram extruder.
