Abstract
Foam formation on the surface of molten metal falling freely into moulds is avoided, by keeping it under a non-oxidising, inert gas atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen. This prevents the entrainment of oxygen, and the formation of bubbles with a tenacious oxide film. Preferably it is done on a continuous casting machine, with a train of closely spaced open top moulds on an endless conveyor. They pass under a cover plate, with a hole for casting molten metal in each mould, as it passes beneath before and beyond this opening, ports in the plate feed nitrogen into the moulds as they approach and pass.
