Description
Process for the production of low-dust inorganic pigment granules with narrow particle size distribution The present invention relates to a method of manufacture of low-dust, flowable pigment granules with a narrow grain size distribution and no oversize content through granulation of pigment / binder mixtures and subsequent comminution during the sieving process.
The granulation of dry pigment / binder mixtures increased temperature (approx. 100-1500C) in mixers and rotating units in DOS 1,542,058, 1,642,990 and 1,792,145. When using waxy, polymeric granulation aids such as fatty acid esters, polyethylene glycol esters and many more. In amounts of up to 2C% by weight, granulates with a grain diameter of 0.5 to 5 are used obtain.
According to C.er DOS 2,836,059, dry mixtures of cadmium pigments are used and waxy polymers (up to 30% by weight) at temperatures up to 2000C in rotating Rolled up drums and formed granules of 0.1 to 5 mm grain size.
The European patent application 0 008 083 describes the production of pigment granules by thermal roll granulation of pigment / binder mixtures at temperatures between 30 and 2000C in heated granulating drums, tumble dryers or on turntables. The granulate yields of the grain fraction are 0.1 to 2.00 mm between 78 and 92%.
With build-up granulation in rotary tubes, drums or on the. Turntable a more or less wide range of grains between 0.1 and 5 mm in diameter obtained, the distribution of which within this fraction depends on the type and amount of Binder as well as pigment properties such as particle size and surface properties depends.
Irregular oversized grains must be separated, ground again and granulation are fed.
Granules with a narrow particle size distribution are according to the methods mentioned obtainable only in relatively low yields (c. 30 to 50%).
However, pigment granules with a narrow particle size distribution are heterogeneous composite granules have clear application advantages. You are exemplary less sensitive to mechanical stresses such as pressure and abrasion during transport or storage; they can be dosed better and therefore better work into plastics or other binder systems.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a method to ask that the manufacture vcn spherical flowable t dispersible pigment granules with a narrow particle size distribution in high yield and made possible without oversized grain. Surprisingly, a method for Production of low-dust, flowable, easily dispersible inorganic pigment granules with a narrow range of grain sizes found by granulating pigment / binder mixtures with the supply of heat and a subsequent sieving process, the sieving process being carried out simultaneously includes a comminution of the granules lying above the grain size spectrum.
If the sieving process is carried out on a vibrating sieve, are particularly narrow grain size distribution achievable. This can be achieved by thermal roll granulation produced granulate batch (particle size distribution between 0.1 mm and 3.5 mm approx. 70-90 %) are converted into granules, more than 80% of which have a particle size distribution of 0.1 up to C, t, mm, if the comminution on a Scawingsneb of MW (mesh size) 0.6 mm is carried out. when shredding on the vibrating sieve increases the fine fraction (0.1 mm) is only insignificant, while granulates with one above the Mesh size of the sieve lying diameter cannot be obtained.
To produce the starting granules, finely powdered inorganic pigments (e.g. Cr2O3, TiO2, rutile and spinel phases or Cadmiur, pigments) are intensively mixed in suitable mixing units with finely ground, waxy, polymeric binders in the dry state and these mixtures are mixed in rotating, heatable units ( Drum, rotary kiln, turntable) at a temperature between 50 and 200 ° C granulated. As granulation aids are polyethers and polyethylene glycols of the general composition = = H and CH3) with molecular weights of 1000 to 30,000 and softening temperatures between 35 and 80 ° C. are the most suitable, with amounts between 1 and 15% by weight being used. It is advantageous to use the waxy binders as finely divided powders in order to achieve as homogeneous a distribution as possible in the pigment during the process. The granulation should take place at temperatures at which the binders are in liquid form (preferably between 75 and 1500C).
Particularly good results with regard to the particle size distribution and the shape of the granules are achieved when the sieve curtain is at temperatures between room temperature and the softening temperature of the binders.
In the case of the Cd pigments, spherical granules are produced in yields of 85 + 5% with a relatively broad grain size distribution between 0.1 and 2 mm obtained when the waxy granulating agents mentioned in close range from 1 to 15 5% by weight (preferably 3 to 10% by weight) can be added as well as in 10 or 60 l drums is granulated (see Examples 1 - 4). The still warm (40 -600C) Granulate batch (including fine and large fraction) is placed on a vibrating sieve (MW 0.6 mm) and with cylindrical sieve aids made of hard rubber or ceramic crushed through the sieve under vibration. Here, the granules with more than 0.6 mm grain diameter and partly irregular oversize grain into an almost spherical one Granules with a narrow particle size distribution between 0.1 and 06 mm transferred. s is It is not advisable to use sieves with mesh sizes smaller than 0.1 mm, as they are finer Pigment granules tend to generate increased dust.
The narrow grain size spectrum that can be achieved depends on the one used Pigment type, the type and amount of binder, the type and mesh size of the sieve as well as the G :: anulate temperature during the sieving process. At higher granulate temperatures are to achieve narrower grain size spectra, whereas with a comminution at low Temperatures (e.g. roughness temperature) with a higher fines content is to be expected.
The fine fraction is obtained through the sieving process at a higher granulate temperature only slightly increased by the abrasion during the sieving process.
The granules obtained according to this invention are particularly useful for Coloring of plastics such as PE, ABS or PP suitable. the Dispersibility is comparable to non-granulated, powdery pigments; with some pigment granulates there was even an improvement over the powders the incorporability determined.
