KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMT:PATENT OFFICE:
.The invention relates to the measuring investigation of radiation, for example Light or X-rays, exposed to the radiation and. more influenced by her Reagents, such as selenium cells or - in the case of X-rays or other ionizing rays - ionization chambers. It is known such investigations to render harmless to deal with sources of error that are attached to the radiation reagent used, that the radiation reagent is not used for the measurement itself, but only for the effect of the examined radiation source with that of another radiation source or with the effect, to be compared, which produces the same radiation source under changed conditions. .
■;■ ,The subject of the invention is a method of this type which is capable of high precision with simple means and at the same time convenient. According to the invention, two radiation reagents are expediently of the same type, so for example - depending on the type of radiation to be examined - two selenium cells, two ionization chambers or the like, initially the action of the radiation source to be examined or another radiation source of the type to be examined under the same conditions, i.e. at the same distance, expediently arranged directly next to one another, exposed. The effect produced by the radiation in each of the two radiation reagents is compared with one another in the two radiation reagents, and the result of this comparison - approximately the ratio of the electrical; The line resistances of the two selenium or ionization cells used are determined in a reproducible manner, for example by setting a Wheatstone bridge according to the resistance ratio. Then one of the 1 two radiation reagents is subjected to a changed effect, i.e. about the same radiation source at a changed distance or also to another radiation source and by changing one or more of the variables influencing the effect of the radiation on the reagents - for example the distance between radiation source and reagent or the absorption capacity of the matter lying between the radiation source and the reagent, - the relationship 1 of the effects of the two radiation reagents established in the first part of the procedure is restored. The relationship between the two changes made for this purpose in the variables determining the effect of the radiation then provides the measure for the quantitatively determined property of the radiation being investigated. ■; ■,
Es ist also beispielsweise α eine zu untersuchende Lichtquelle, b eine Lichtquelle von bekannterDevices for two embodiments of this process are shown schematically in the drawing. In the embodiment according to FIGS. 1 and 2, in addition to the radiation source α to be examined, a second radiation source b, for example one with a known intensity of the radiation, is used. So it is, for example, α a light source to be examined, b a known light source
First (Fig. I) the cells c and d are exposed directly next to each other to the action of one of the two radiation sources, for example the radiation source h , and their resistance ratio occurring under these conditions is set to zero by setting one of the two cells c and d each containing one side of the bridge
ίο Wheatstoneschen Brücke festgelegt. Sodann
Verhältnis j/ 2 : i[jauf die Hälfte ab-.

Then one of the cells, for example c, is exposed to the action of the radiation source b, the other to that of the radiation source α (Pig. 2), and b or α or both are exposed to their associated cell (c or rf) until the Whieatstone Bridge, which was left unchanged, stands back in place. The effects of the radiation on the two cells, that is to say also the intensities of the radiation at the locations of the cells in the two arrangements (FIGS. 1 and 2), are then in the same relationship to one another as before. If the intensity of one radiation source itself, i.e. its strength, is known, the strength of the other is calculated in a known manner from the distances between the radiation sources and the radiation reagents.
The figures (FIGS. 3 and 4) illustrate a device for an embodiment of the method which is used to determine the penetrability of the radiation being examined, for example X-rays or similar rays. Again (Fig. 3) the two radiation reagents, for example two selenium cells or two ionization chambers c and d, are exposed directly next to one another to the radiation emanating from the same radiation source, here an X-ray tube, and the ratio of their resistance values is set to zero rather, the two cells c and d are each defined as one of their four sides of the Wheatstone bridge. The two cells c and d are then brought to different distances from one another, but in a known ratio, for example in the ratio | / 2.: I, distances from the radiation source α (FIG. 4), and between the radiation source α and the closer to her lying cell c . a layer e which absorbs the examined radiation is placed with such a thickness that the Wheatstone Bridge, which has been left unchanged, now stands at zero. Then the thickness of the layer e of the selected absorbing material forms a measure of the penetration capacity of the radiation examined. It is nämlieh the thickness of that layer from the selected absorbent materials which the radiation to the same Bruchteil.Wie the greater distance d of the cell by the radiation source a, j ie when said ratio as an example / 2: i [JClick half off . weakens, i.e. in this case the so-called half-value layer, which is commonly used as a measure of penetration ability.
All these embodiments of the new method in common and essential for this is the first comparison of the two radiation reagents with one another under the same proportions for both radiation reagents and the determination of the Relationship between the values of a quantity characteristic of them among them same conditions. 'This makes the subsequent one easy to design Restoration of this relationship under at least one radiation reagent changed conditions the comparison of these changed conditions with those of the other, radiation reagent and thus the determination of the quantity to be measured independently sources of error in the radiation reagents and therefore made possible with accuracy.
If one wants to use from 1 to the new method radiation reagents in which the to be determined magnitude relation itself depends again on the intensity of radiation used, so even then the measurement remains true if the irradiation conditions of one of the two radiation reagents are left unchanged throughout the process, when Thus, for example, in FIG. 2 the radiation source b is just as far away from the radiation reagent c as in FIG. i, and in FIG. 4 the radiation source α is at the same distance from the radiation reagent d as in FIG.
