Description
The invention relates to a method for preventing the oxidation of a copper surface by Treating with a hydrocarbon halogen compound, and in particular a method of prevention the oxidation of a copper layer applied to the surface of a ceramic substrate in the form of a Electrode or an electrically conductive device on a ceramic substrate.
An example of facilities with a copper layer on the surface of a ceramic substrate are ceramic capacitors. The electrodes of such ceramic capacitors hitherto have generally been made using silver, which has high electrical properties Has conductivity, produced. These silver electrodes were molded by applying a silver paste a layer on the ceramic and firing the material. With the increase in the cost of the silver material is recently also the proportion of the cost of these silver electrodes in the total cost of the ceramic capacitor has increased, which in turn increases the total cost of the ceramic capacitor brings with it.
So were various investigations to develop a method for producing metal layers carried out, for example by electroless plating, by vacuum vapor deposition, by sputtering, by ion plating and the same. On the other hand, the utility of an inexpensive metal to replace silver as an electrode has become examined
The above-mentioned tendency of the copper electrodes to oxidize has the consequence that the electrical conductivity of the electrode decreases because of the formation of the oxide layer, which also affects the solderability from solid copper, for example by metallizing, by compacting and by increasing the adhesion and stabilization. For this purpose, a heat treatment is generally carried out in an inert atmosphere so that the copper layer cannot react with oxygen. In this way, the copper layer applied for the above-described processes is obtained which has electrical properties which come very close to those of pure copper and which is suitable for producing a ceramic capacitor with high reliability. Carrying out the heat treatment, however, has the consequence that the copper layer has an even greater tendency to oxidize, which over time leads to a change in its properties, a situation which is apparently based on the fact that the surface of the copper layer is catalytically active. Therefore, such a copper layer must be subjected to an oxidation prevention treatment.
From US-PS 21 45 827 it is already known that the surface of steel objects can be coated with a hydrocarbon halogen compound with a boiling point of more than 100 ° C., namely with dichloropentane. This application of the halogenated hydrocarbon with a boiling temperature of more than 100 ° C forms a protective layer which prevents oxidation of the metal surface.
From DE-AS 10 79 420, on the other hand, it is known that one can produce adhesive intermediate layers for oxygen-permeable, heat-resistant paint and varnish coatings on copper oxide dissolving and film-forming organic acids and their derivatives can use.
The object of the present invention is to improve a method of the type specified at the outset for preventing oxidation of a copper surface by treating it with a hydrocarbon-halogen compound in such a way that the catalytic properties of the copper surface are inhibited, with the result that this copper layer tends less to oxidation and not to discoloration, has excellent electrical properties and soldering properties, and these properties do not change even after prolonged storage.
This object is now achieved by the characterizing features of the method according to the main claim. The subclaims relate to particularly preferred embodiments of this subject matter of the invention.

First, an electrode in the form of a nickel layer applied by electroless plating was examined. This nickel electrode has proven to some extent successful as an inexpensive replacement electrode for the silver electrode. However, it has been found that a nickel electrode for ceramic capacitors problems arise in the application, since the resistivity of the nickel electrode 7.24 · 10- 6 ohm-cm, which is higher than the resistivity is of silver with 1.62 × 1O - - ohm cm. There are also deterioration in the frequency characteristic in the high frequency range and difficulties in that the solderability of the nickel electrode is poor. Attempts have also been made to cover the entire surface of the nickel electrode with a layer of solder in order to lower the specific resistance of the nickel electrode. To do this, however, a large amount of active flux must be used, which must be removed after the soldering process in order to clean the electrode. In addition, when the material is immersed in a solder bath, stresses occur in the ceramic material, which can give rise to cracks.
A further investigation attempted to replace the nickel electrode described above with a cheaper one To replace the electrode, namely by a copper layer applied by electroless plating. Included However, it has been found that serious in the production of the electrolessly deposited copper electrode Difficulties arise because the copper electrode applied by electroless plating is subject to oxidation tends and has a high specific resistance compared to solid copper. Similar problems result from the deposition of the copper electrode by vacuum evaporation, by sputtering or by ion coating.
The principle of a preferred embodiment of the invention is described in general below.
First, a ceramic body is made of, for example, a dielectric, insulating, semiconducting or resistance material or similar material. Then, using thin-film technology, such as B. by electroless plating, vacuum evaporation, sputtering, ion plating or the like, a Copper layer applied to the surface of the ceramic body. By using a dielectric Ceramic as a ceramic body and by applying the copper layer to the surface of the same is obtained a capacitor. By using a ceramic such. B. aluminum oxide, zirconium oxide, or forsterite Like, as a ceramic body and by applying a copper layer in the form of a circuit on the surface of the same one obtains a printed circuit. In addition, one obtains by applying a copper layer onto the surface of a ceramic body made of, for example, a semiconducting or resistance material or similar material, various types of electronic components.
B. in Stickstoff, unterworfen. Die wärmebehandelte Kupferschicht ist metallisiert und weist eine staijie Haftung und verbesserte elektrische Eigenschaften auf, so daß sie besonders bevorzugte Eigenschaften besitzt Ajfgrund der Tatsache, daß die Kupferschicht bei der Wärmebehandlung einer thermischen Hysterese bei einer hohen Temperatur unterliegt, *ird iiir auch eine katalytische Aktivität verliehen, so daß daraus eine sehr aktive Kupferschicht mit der gleichen katalytischen Aktivität wie Raney-Kupfer entstehtThe method according to the invention should preferably applied as soon as possible to each cup using any such process, such as electroless plating, Vacuum evaporation, sputtering, ion coating and the like. Has been produced, since the on these The copper layer obtained in any way tends to be oxidized. In addition, the copper layer which has been subjected to the heat treatment has the property of being more prone to being oxidized to be as if it has not been heat treated. In particular, there are then different types of electronic components including those applied to the surface of ceramic bodies various processes applied copper layers a heat treatment at one temperature of about 700 ° C in an inert atmosphere, such as. B. in nitrogen, subjected. The heat treated The copper layer is metallized and has a staijie adhesion and improved electrical properties so that it has particularly preferable properties Because of the fact that the copper layer in the Heat treatment is subject to thermal hysteresis at a high temperature catalytic activity, so that it becomes a very active copper layer with the same catalytic activity how Raney copper is made
According to the invention, the copper layer having such a catalytic activity should be as fast as possible treated with a hydrocarbon halogen compound. In particular, the shorter it is, the better is the period of time after the heat treatment of the copper layer until it becomes the hydrocarbon halogen compound is exposed. If this is feasible, the copper layer should preferably be within 30 minutes after the heat treatment, the hydrocarbon halogen compound was brought into contact will. In this method of treatment with the hydrocarbon halogen compound, the active ones go Centers of the copper layer due to a poisoning effect of the hydrocarbon halogen compound lost, whereby the catalytic activity is lost, with the result that the copper layer is stable and becomes difficult to oxidize.
Als Kohlenwasserstoffhalogenverbindung wird mindestens ein Vertreter aus der Gruppe Trichloräthyien, Perchloräthylen, Chlorfluorkohlenwasserstoff, Chlorbenzol, Methylchlorid, Methylenchlorid, Chloroform und Tetrachlorkohlenwasserstoff verwendet. Als Verfahren zur Behandlung der wärmebehjnHpltpnThe hydrocarbon halogen compound is at least a representative from the group trichlorethylene, perchlorethylene, chlorofluorocarbon, chlorobenzene, Methyl chloride, methylene chloride, chloroform and hydrocarbon tetrachloride are used. As a procedure for the treatment of wärmebehjnHpltpn
Layer with such a hydrocarbon halogen compound is used a method in which the Hydrocarbon halogen compound applied in the form of a coating, the compound sprayed on, the Layer is immersed in the compound, or the layer is exposed to a vapor of this compound like
According to another preferred embodiment of the invention, a solution of the hydrocarbon halogen compound is used with a surfactant dissolved therein used in the process to which the layer of hydrocarbon halogen compound is exposed (treated with). As long as the surfactant is soluble in the hydrocarbon halogen compound, can any type of surfactant can be used. It should be noted that the The type of surfactant is by no means limited to the examples given above. When the heat-treated copper layer is a solution of a hydrocarbon halogen compound with exposure to a surfactant dissolved therein may be a method of applying the solution in the form of a layer, for spraying the solution, for dipping the film in the solution or the like. be applied. In the treatment of the layer with the hydrocarbon halogen compound, including of a surface-active agent, a monomoiekuiare is created on the surface of the copper layer Surface active agent layer and the effect of preventing oxidation of the copper layer and the prevention of a time-dependent change of the shift becomes more pronounced compared with the case wherein the hydrocarbon halogen compound does not contain a surfactant.

In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention, a solution of a hydrocarbon halogen compound is used with a fatty acid such as stearic acid or a higher fatty acid ester dissolved therein such as wax, used in the process in which the copper layer is the hydrocarbon halogen compound exposed (treated).
