Audiovisual learning, examination, quiz and intelligence testing device

The invention relates to an electronic question and answer device with which knowledge or teaching material can be imparted, learned and tested and intelligence tests can be carried out, whereby the device can be used both at home for acquiring and testing knowledge and in schools for teaching, for example with questions tailored to textbooks or for carrying out tests.

A large number of learning and testing devices based on a question/answer system, also with an audio-visual character, are known, in which the correct answer to a question must be found from several offered. In OS 2725298, for example, a training device is described in which the correct answer to a task must be found in an answer field. PS 2926420 deals with a question/answer game, in which the correct answer must be entered. OS 3201305 and OS 3332869 also contain learning/testing devices based on the question-answer principle, in which only test questions are asked and a number of answers are offered for each question, from which the learner must determine the correct answer.

The known learning devices do not allow questions and answers to be asked in a demonstration mode (correct answer is demonstrated), learning mode (correct answer can be found by trying) and/or test mode (correct answer must be given) and to allow or prohibit scrolling through the questions. The invention therefore set itself the task of creating a handy and above all easy, i.e. intuitively operated device that has four operating modes, the demonstration mode, the learning mode, the test mode and the intelligence test mode, so that in the demonstration mode knowledge can be imparted by asking questions and explaining answers, in the learning mode active learning takes place by asking questions and trying to find the correct answer, and in the test mode the knowledge learned can be checked by asking questions and allowing the correct answer to be given once.

This object underlying the invention is achieved by the design according to the characterizing features of claim 1. Further advantageous designs can be found in the subclaims.

The corresponding response offers are stored in a memory module with additional attributes, so that they appear on the display in the operating mode set for the corresponding attribute on the device.

The advantages achieved with the invention are in particular that, for example, a question with the associated answers can have one or more attributes, so that it can be called up in just one or in several operating modes. The memory modules can contain a ROM, EPROM, EEPROM or other storage media that can only be read or read and rewritten. When using rewritable memory modules, for example standard photo memory cards from digital cameras or normal floppy disks, it is also possible to save the answers given in the test mode for the purpose of evaluation.

The programming of the memory module, i.e. the application of the questions with the corresponding attributes and answers, can be carried out by the supplier, for example of the corresponding textbooks, or by the user using a PC and the corresponding software, if necessary using an adapter to accommodate the module. To check or test the programmed memory module, the device can be simulated on the PC, i.e. the structure can be shown in such a way that the buttons and switches shown can be activated by clicking the mouse, comparable to the simulation of a pocket calculator on a PC. In the case of textbooks, a memory module with corresponding questions and answers with different attributes can be supplied for each or several chapters. The memory modules can be copied by the user using a PC, whereby if the format differs from the usual diskette format, the above-mentioned adapter is used. For example, to carry out a knowledge test, a corresponding module can be created by the examiner himself, in which case all questions only receive the test attribute. In addition, each question can be given a time limit for answering it. The device must be set to test mode in order to carry out the test. The number of correctly answered questions is shown in a control/result display field compared to the total number of questions asked. A point rating and a percentage rating can be given.

A printer port, also preferably located on the back, can be used to create a hard copy at any time by pressing a button, i.e. the entire content of all display fields or parts of the monitor can be printed out, which provides another option for evaluating tests.

The questions and answers can be presented by text or graphic output, voice or sound output or film sequences. This allows verbal, musical or even film-based questions and answers to be implemented. The previously mentioned test mode is also used to conduct quiz-like question/answer games, as there is no difference to an exam. When conducting quiz games, two players are very often involved, with one playing against the other. To implement this application variant, the device has two sockets on the front for connecting two small control panels with corresponding buttons for answering the questions. By plugging in these control panels for the two players, the device's original answer buttons are disabled and the device switches to quiz mode. The points achieved are displayed separately for each player in the control/result display field.

Another operating mode of the device is the intelligence test mode. Here, the questions with the corresponding answers that have the intelligence test attribute are displayed or played. Only one answer is correct, with a follow-up question being asked after the answer has been given or after a time limit. An internal assessment is carried out and after all questions have been run through, an IQ value determined using known methods is displayed. The invention will be explained below using an example. It shows:

As can be seen from Fig. 1, all operating and display elements are housed in an individually designed housing 1. The device is switched on using the on/off switch 2, which is combined with a control LED 3 to indicate that the power supply is correct. The power supply is via built-in batteries and/or, as shown in Fig. 2, via a power pack that can be connected to the power socket 4, which also recharges the batteries. After switching on, the BIOS and operating system are loaded as usual on a PC, after which the readiness for operation is indicated by a corresponding output in the operating/result display field 5. If there is no memory module 6 in the memory module holder 7 (see side view shown in Fig. 4), the output could be: "OK>Insert memory module". If a memory module is already plugged in, the message "OK>Press start button" could appear. If the memory module 6 is a normal floppy disk, the memory module holder 7 is a floppy disk drive. The first task is called up from the memory module using the Start/New button 8. This button can be pressed at any time during the demonstration, learning, exam/quiz or intelligence test process - this restarts the task cycle of the tasks in the memory module with the corresponding attribute, resetting any points already collected or other evaluations. The operating mode switch 9 is preferably located on the back of the device, see Fig. 2. The set operating mode is permanently displayed on the information display panel 10. The operating mode switch can be designed as a slide switch with labels for the switch positions or a button for cyclical selection of the operating mode according to the display. In addition to the operating mode

mode display, further information on the inserted memory module, such as module name, manufacturer, creation date, number of questions with the set operating mode attribute can appear in the information display field 10 as a status display.

The task in the form of a text output, a still image or a film sequence is given in the task field 11, whereby a voice or sound output can also be provided via a built-in loudspeaker. In the five answer fields 12 with the associated selection buttons 13, which are labeled a to e for the clear assignment of tasks and solutions from teaching materials, the answers are also displayed in the form of text or still images or played as film sequences, whereby a sound output is also possible here after pressing a button a to e. If the button corresponding to the correct answer has been pressed, a green frame appears in the associated answer field; answer fields with incorrect solutions receive a red frame after pressing the associated buttons. An exception is the demonstration mode, in which the correct answer is immediately framed in green. Instead of the illuminated frames in the answer fields, a two-color LED in transparent caps of the selection buttons 13 could be used to indicate the correct or incorrect answer. The device can also have a built-in microphone so that, for example, the pronunciation of a text answer for learning a foreign language can be checked using a speech recognition comparison.

The forward button 14 and back button 15 can be used to scroll forwards and backwards through the tasks presented in demonstration mode and learning mode, along with the corresponding solutions. In exam/quiz mode and intelligence test mode, these buttons, which are conveniently designed in a triangular shape, are ineffective. The print button 16 can be used to print out a standard PC hard copy, i.e. the entire content of all display fields or just the operating/result display field 5 and the information display field 10 at the time the button is pressed is printed out via the parallel Centronics printer interface 17.

The display fields 5, 10, 11 and 12 can consist of separate displays, for example in LCD design, partially combined displays or a continuous display, whereby the optical separation of the fields is taken over by the display itself or housing parts.

When working through quiz questions for two people A and B as opponents, two small control panels 19, which also have the answer buttons a to e, can be connected via the sockets 18, as shown in Fig. 3. The operating mode switch 9 must be in the test position for quiz questions. The task and the solutions are given in the same way as when operated by one person using the corresponding fields 11 and 12. The device should therefore be set up so that both quiz players can clearly see the task and the solutions. The player who types in the correct answer first on his control panel receives one point or, for more serious questions, several points. The points achieved are displayed for each player in the control/result display field 5.

Fig. 5 shows the block diagram of the combined learning, testing and intelligence testing device with the following components:

The following are connected to the system bus 20, consisting of the address bus 21, the data bus 22 and the control bus 23:

An input and output unit 29 enables the connection:

- the keyboard interface 30 for the Start/New button 8, the selection buttons 13, the Forward button 14, the Back button 15, the Print button 16 and the connection of the two control panels 19,

- the operating mode switch 9

- the printer interface 17 for connecting a printer 31, and

- the memory module holder 7 for holding the memory module 6

In the following, the operating sequence and the device's options for each adjustable operating mode are described in more detail using examples from the programming sheet shown in Fig. 11.

Demonstration mode:

Fig. 6 shows an example in demonstration mode. The operating mode switch is in the demonstration (V) position, so that in the task field 11 only the questions from the memory module 6 are asked or played that have the demonstration attribute, here the 3rd question with the V attribute. The correct answer appears in one of the answer fields 12, framed in green, while the other answer fields show incorrect answers, which are, however, described in such a way that they could initially appear to be correct if you read them quickly or look at them, and are intended to stimulate thought. After pressing the forward button 14, the next question appears with its possible answers. In demonstration mode, the forward and back buttons 14 and 15 can be used to scroll forwards or backwards through the questions and the corresponding answers. A point evaluation in the operating/result display field 5 is not provided.

Learning mode:

Fig. 7 shows an example in learning mode. The operating mode switch is in the learning (L) position, which means that only the questions from the memory module 6 that have the learning attribute are asked or played in the task field 11, here the 3rd question with the L attribute. Five possible answers appear in the answer fields 12, with only one answer being correct. By pressing the corresponding buttons 13, the correct answer can be found, the answer field of which is framed in green. If the correct solution has been found, the test is repeated, possibly with a slight delay.

Exam/Quiz Mode: Fig. 8 shows an example in exam mode. The operating

The mode switch is in the test/quiz (P,Q) position, which means that only the questions that have the test attribute are taken from the memory module. Five solutions are offered in the answer fields 12, of which, as in the learning mode, only one is correct, but this must now be given by pressing the corresponding button 13. The correct solution is again framed in green, incorrect answers are framed in red. After a button has been pressed or the time limit for answering a question has been exceeded, the next task is presented. In the test/quiz mode, the buttons 14 and 15 for scrolling forwards and backwards through the tasks are ineffective. During the test, the operating/result display field 5 always shows how many questions have been answered correctly or incorrectly so far, how many points have been achieved so far and what percentage this corresponds to.

If the device is used as a quiz game device for two opponents A and B, i.e. the two control panels 19 are plugged in, only the questions with the test attribute are played. A corresponding example is shown in Fig. 9. Based on the plugged in control panels, the device recognizes that the test questions are being used for a quiz game and makes the relevant modifications in the information field 10 and control/result display field 5. The player who was the first to answer the question presented via his control panel is shown the

The points associated with the question are added. Each player only has one attempt. The next question is displayed after the question has been answered correctly by one of the players, both players have answered the question incorrectly or a time limit has been exceeded. During the game, each player is evaluated according to their points in the control/result display field 5.

Intelligence test mode: Fig. 10 shows an example of how to perform an Intelli

test. The operating mode switch is in the intelligence test (IQ) position, which means that only the questions with the intelligence test attribute are taken from the memory module. The correct answer must be determined from the five offered by pressing a button, whereby the correct answer is briefly framed in green, while incorrect answers are framed in red. After the button is pressed or the time limit is exceeded, the next task appears. The forward/backward buttons 14 and 15 are ineffective in intelligence test mode. During the intelligence test, the operating/result display field 5 also shows after each question how many questions have been answered correctly or incorrectly so far. After all the intelligence test questions have been run through, the software determines the intelligence quotient and displays it in the operating/result display field 5.

In all operating modes, the following messages are displayed in the information display field 10:

- Information about the memory module (name, manufacturer, date of creation)

- the set operating mode,
as well as

- the total number of tasks that will appear in the set operating mode.

Protection claims 1. Audiovisual learning, test, quiz and intelligence test device for imparting, learning or testing knowledge or teaching material and carrying out quizzes or intelligence tests using an individually designed housing (1) and commercially available electronic components, characterized in that it has four operating modes for selecting questions and answers provided with corresponding attributes, the "demonstration mode", the "learning mode", the "exam/quiz mode" and the "intelligence test mode" and the necessary block diagram is made up of the following components, namely on a system bus (20), consisting of an address bus (21), a data bus (22) and a control bus (23) are a microprocessor (24), a read/write memory RAM (25), a BIOSROM (26), a video interface (27) for a monitor (28) on which a Control/result display field (5), an information display field (10), a task field (11) and answer fields (12) are shown, as well as input/output units (29), which simultaneously enable the connection of a keyboard interface (30) for a start/new button (8), the selection switch (13), a forward button (14), a back button (15), a print button (16) and the control panels (19) as well as an operating mode switch (9), a printer interface (17) for connecting a printer (31) and a memory module holder (7) for holding a memory module (6). 2. Audiovisual learning, examination, quiz and intelligence test device according to the preceding claims, characterized in that in the examination mode an assessment is carried out after or during the completion of all questions. 24. Audiovisual learning, examination, quiz and intelligence test device according to the preceding claims, characterized in that the device is also used as a quiz game device in examination mode, whereby the control panels (19) with their selection buttons are plugged in via the sockets (18) for the opponents A and B in such a way that the selection buttons (13) of the device become ineffective. 25. Audiovisual learning, examination, quiz and intelligence test device according to claims 1 to 24, characterized in that the start/new button (8) can be operated at any time, regardless of the operating mode set, so that the task cycle is restarted and assessments are reset.
