Abstract

The method for contactless measurement of vehicle wheel (1-4) axle and steering (5) geometry data involves forming an image dependent on wheel orientation on a video tube (7,8). The image is then evaluated electronically. The equipment does not require adjustment and enables fully automatic data display. An elliptical image of the outer wheel (1-4) rim circle or a concentric circle is formed for each wheel. The large and small dia. of the ellipse are measured electronically as are the spatial coordinates and those of the point of intersection. The wheel axle and steering geometry data are determined from derived wheel plane and steering axis positions and the known video tube position and wheel dimensions.
