Versuche mit Quellstoffgranulat oder Quellstoffpulver haben ergeben, daß lediglich dann ein Aufsaugen von Flüssigkeit stattfindet, wenn ein direkter Kontakt zwischen dem-Quellstoff und einer benäßten Fläche stattfindet. Schüttet man Quellstoffgranulat auf ein mit Wasser teilgefülltes Uhrglas, so bilden sich aus dem GRanulat mehrere übereinander liegende Schichten. Das Aufsaugen des Wassers erfolgt, da die unterste Schicht direkt im Wasser liegt, durch diese relativ schnell, und zwar bis zur maximalen Aufnahmefähigkeit des Quellstoffgranulates. Dabei ist ein erstaunliches Phänomen zu beobachten, daß nämlich das gequollene Granulat, nachdem der Aufsaugprozeß durch Sättigung abgeschlossen ist, in der Form von Felsblöcken im Wasser ruht und sich auf diesem gequollenen Granulat eine weitere Schicht Granulat befindet, die überhaupt noch keine Quellung zeigt.
