KAISERLICHES PATENTAMT. PATENTSCHRIFT KLASSE 47: Maschinenelemente. PATENT CLASS 47: Machine elements. Patented in the German Empire on May 11, 1884. The piston exerts a pressure against the inner cylinder wall which is in proportion to the total pressure on the piston, and thereby effects the seal. The piston B is hollowed out on one or both ends and the wall thickness tapers outwards from the center. In Fig. 1 the piston with its hollow ends consists of one piece, while in Fig. 2 it is composed of a central guide piece and special end or sealing pieces. Each sealing piece b (hollow hemisphere or spherical segment) is made of two overlapping parts d d 'which are connected by elastic bands e. The outer surface of the sealing piece b is turned in the shape of a cylinder to match the cylinder wall to a suitable width. In this way each of them is given a tapered edge /. The piston rod g is attached to one of the seal pieces. When steam, gas or compressed air flows into the cylinder, the hollow end surfaces of the piston B are pressed apart and the tapered edges / against the cylinder wall A, thereby causing the seal. The magnitude of the side pressure is always in proportion to the total pressure on the piston, so that the friction between piston and cylinder is in the same proportion to the total pressure. When two parts d dl are employed, the bands e permit a slight rotation and a corresponding spreading of the parts. The arrangement shown in FIG. 1 is preferable for steam engines, while that shown in FIGS. 2 to 4 is to be used for gas and air engines. The piston only needs to have a hollow end if the force only acts on one piston end, e.g. B. in some gas and air machines. In the arrangement shown in FIG. 2, the guide piece α can be omitted.
