Patentiert im Deutschen Reiche vom 5. Juli 1913 ab.Patented in the German Empire on July 5, 1913.
Das Verfahren bedarf alsoAttempts to make potash lye usable for the preparation of magnesium oxide and hydrochloric acid go back to the last decades of the last century. Apart from the procedure of the United Chemischen Fabriken Leopoldshall, none has been able to hold up to our day. This now consists in mixing the final liquor, which has been evaporated to the so-called six salt Mg Cl 2 · 6 H 2 O, with part of the magnesium oxide obtained in the process and forming cakes which are ignited in the shaft furnace with the addition of steam. So the procedure needs
In addition to the glow in the shaft furnace, there are two more stages: that of thickening the final liquor and that of converting the final liquor into solid form. The process cannot escape the first stage, since otherwise all of the MgSO 4 contained in the final liquor would be transferred to the ignition residue, which would not only devalue the MgO that is coming on the market, but also to fully reuse part of the Mg O obtained Solidification of the final liquor would result in an enrichment of the Mg SO 4 content that would lead to the complete worthlessness of the Mg O. In the second stage, however, there is a particular disadvantage that, according to the figures that have leaked to the public, 40 percent of the MgO obtained during annealing must return to the process in order to bring the evaporated final liquor into the form suitable for annealing in the shaft furnace. However, these 40 percent mean an extraordinary burden on the system and operating costs.
Tests have now shown that you can do this faster than this and the other methods achieves the goal if the final liquor is subjected to electrolysis, whereby at the cathode Magnesium hydroxide is formed. If a certain current strength is maintained or if the current direction is occasionally reversed the cathodes clean themselves. The magnesium hydroxide collects in the process at the bottom of the cell and, if it remains in the electrolyte for a long time, goes in Magnesium oxychloride over.
The magnesium hydroxide or magnesium oxychloride obtained in this way is now removed from the electrolyte and with the adhering liquid (the electrolyte) without Preheating exposed to intense heat, with Mg O on the one hand and H Cl on the other. The sudden heating can e.g. B. also happen by the fact that the wet mass drip onto a hot surface.
If the final liquor contains a lot of KCl, NaCl, it is advisable to reduce it to the spec. Wt. 1.357 or to evaporate even more, with artificial carnallite obtained on the one hand during cooling on the other hand, the salts KCl and NaCl, which have an adverse effect on electrolysis can be removed except for small residues. According to the above, it goes without saying even that you can work with and without a diaphragm.
Dem Verfahren der Vereinigten Chemischen Fabriken Leopoldshall gegenüber besitzt das vorliegende folgende Vorzüge:The process of the United Chemical Factories Leopoldshall has that present the following benefits:
1. The final liquor is thickened to form Mg Cl 2 · 6 H 2 O, since with the final liquor adhering to the magnesium hydroxide or the magnesium oxychloride only a fraction of the total final liquor is exposed to higher temperatures for hydrochloric acid extraction, whereby the sulfuric acid content of the magnesium oxide falls below the harmful limit is lowered.
Magnesium hydroxide or magnesium oxychloride represents an easy-to-handle mass with the adhering final liquor, so that mixing of the final liquor with other substances to be converted into a form suitable for annealing in the shaft furnace not applicable.
The cycle that 40 percent of the MgO recovered must describe in order to bring the evaporated final liquor into a solid form suitable for glowing.
