Patentirt im Deutschen Reiche vom 30. August 1883 ab.Patented in the German Empire on August 30, 1883.
So far the galvanic elements with lead peroxide or with manganese peroxide Investigations made have shown that the internal resistance of such an element diminishes when the carbon electrode, even if it is at the expense of the ability of the exciting solution to act, firmly with it Lead or manganese peroxide is surrounded. It has also been found that the conductivity of a similar electrode increases with the accumulation or mass of active materials, d. H. with the continuity of the solid substance and that is, the decrease in the number of holes filled by the liquid increases. Through this saw Leclanche prompts himself to be as compact as possible to strive for. He compressed the mixture on the press, and thus achieved its execution one of the most remarkable galvanic elements ever created.
The above facts, which are extraordinarily significant, have been obtained from the constructors no attention was paid to the secondary elements. Yes, instead of these experiences to utilize for the accumulators, almost aimed at reducing the compactness and to increase the porosity of the electrodes as much as possible.
In the case of the accumulators with lead plates and artificial deposits of black lead, red lead, Lead sponge or the like (accumulators of the Faure, Sellon and Volckmar) is stated that these artificially applied layers by being under the effect of an electric current into brown superoxide, not their original one Retain volume, but swell and throw up. The cohesion and the adhesion of the superoxide to the lead plate decrease, the resistance of the accumulator grows until at last the electrodes cease to function, experience has has shown that the positive plates, if used continuously, are already unsuitable after a period of one year will.
According to Faure's own view (see Annales de Γalectriciti No. 7 of August 15, 1882, p. 105), the transformation of the layer on the plate forming the positive pole takes place only to a small extent, namely at hardly more than 10 pCt. the whole crowd. A considerable part, about 90 pct, remains unaffected by the current. Faure attributes this to the resistance that a quasi- solid substance, such as lead sponge and its oxides, opposes the electrolytic effect.
Kurz zusammengefafst, ergiebt sich sonach, dafs die Accumulatoren mit künstlich aufgebrachter Schicht zwei grofse Mängel besitzen, welche ihrer allgemeineren gewerblichen Verwerthung entgegenstehen, nämlich:Briefly summarized, it follows that the accumulators with artificially applied Layer have two great defects, which are their more general commercial exploitation oppose, namely:
The change in volume of the applied layer due to its conversion into superoxide requires the positive plate to be discarded annually.
A large part of the covering layer is withdrawn from the action of the current.
Um diesen beiden Mängeln abzuhelfen, werden, in Anbetracht dessen, dafs die Principien, welche der Construction der galvanischen (prir mären) Elemente mit Blei- und mit Mangansuperoxyd zu Grunde liegen, auch für Accumulatoren anwendbar sind, für diese Secundär-Elemente Elektroden angewendet, bei welchen eine gewisse Quantität Harz als Bindemittel für eine Mischung von auf elektro-chemischem WegeIn order to remedy these two deficiencies, in view of the fact that the principles which the construction of the galvanic (primary) elements with lead and with manganese superoxide are also applicable to accumulators, for these secondary elements Electrodes used in which a certain quantity of resin is used as a binder for a mixture of electro-chemical means
This whole Mass is subjected to a strong pressure (of more than ι oo atmospheres), namely at a temperature which allows the resin to develop its binding force.
The patentee places great emphasis on the use of electro-chemical means preserved brown lead peroxide; because one would, even under pressure, lead sponge, black lead or mix red lead with coke, then in the course of using the accumulator the volume of the lead sponge, the black lead or red lead multiply and the coke particles separate from each other so that the plate no longer forms an extremely compact mass, but soon would exhibit the same defects as the ordinary electrodes. One on electro-chemical On the other hand, superoxide obtained by way has the maximum volume, which even with continued The effect of the electric current cannot be greater and therefore offers a guarantee against damage to the panels and its consequences.
The high pressure is necessary insofar as one in the preparation of the mixture or when applying a lead oxide layer to a lead or carbon plate by hand only a pressure of a few kilograms per square centimeter and therefore only imperfect Can achieve cohesion and adhesion. In the agglomerate used here, on the other hand, the enormous pressure creates a hydraulic or steam press the particles of superoxide with a conductive substance, that pulverized coke, as it were fused, and the size of the pores and cavities in the Electrodes are reduced to a minimum.
The process for producing the agglomerate is as follows:
In the form in which the mixture to be compressed is affected by the action of the piston is exposed, a cast iron or steel plate heated to the point of red heat is arranged, and the well mixed materials are poured onto it. Then you run the Pistons begin their activity and compress the mass with about 300 atmospheres, 'whereby As a result of the heat of the red-hot plate, the resin melts and is an excellent binder gives off.
Despite the great cohesion and adhesion between the constituents of the The resistance in the electrodes, explained above according to Faure, cannot agglomerate appear; because the superoxide mass does not form a uniform, homogeneous layer here, but their individual particles are in a state of finest distribution and on that Most intimately united with a conductive substance. It is, therefore, thanks to the compression that Conductivity increased considerably. The polarization of the electrodes produced in this way is infinitely less than the accumulators from Plante or Faure and, As has been shown by experiment, every particle of the brown oxide is subject to the action of the electric current.
The cakes created by the compression can be of any shape and thickness to have; but in order to keep the resistance as low as possible, it is advisable to use it only to give about 5 mm thickness.
In order to make the greatest possible use of the advantage that the plates are an agglomerate throughout form, they are immersed for the most part in the liquid. It's about to end Applying the pressure, a thin strip of lead has been introduced into the mixture is extended upwards to serve as a pole of the electrode. This pole strip is for Partly provided with a suitable coating, whereby the rising of the liquid prevents will.
In allen Fällen lassen sich die so gekennzeichneten Platten verwenden: The mixing ratios of the materials used for the electrodes must be determined note that they can be varied within wide limits. Generally gives assuming a pressure of over 100 atmospheres and a temperature of approx. 100 ° a mixture of approx. 5 pCt. Resin, 35 pCt. brown lead peroxide (on electrochemical Paths generated) and 60 pCt. pulverized coke gives good results. The plates marked in this way can be used in all cases:
1. als positive, den positiven Pol bildende Elektrode eines Accumulators mit einer aus Retortenkohle bestehenden negativen Elektrode und einer leicht mit Schwefelsäure angesäuerten Kupfer- oder Zinkvitriollösung als Flüssigkeit;1. as a positive, the positive pole forming electrode of an accumulator with a Retort carbon negative electrode and one slightly acidified with sulfuric acid Copper or zinc vitriol solution as a liquid;
2. als positive und negative Elektrode bei Accumulatoren mit verdünnter Schwefelsäure als Flüssigkeit.2. as positive and negative electrodes Accumulators with dilute sulfuric acid as a liquid.
