Experiments which were made with the intention of making pure trinitrotoluene by recrystallization from alcohol or other suitable organic solvents or mixtures of such remaining distillation residues have shown that under suitable conditions, namely by nitration with one rich in sulfuric acid and one rich in nitric acid poor nitrating acid, a so-called liquid trinitrotoluene from the residues can be won. This liquid trinitrotoluene is mainly a mixture from various isomeric trinitro compounds of toluene.
Bei der Gewinnung der in Betracht kommenden Destillationsrückstände aus Rohtrinitrotoluol ist folgendes zu beachten:In the recovery of the distillation residues in question from crude trinitrotoluene the following must be observed:
Alcohol, in which 2x4x6-trinitrotoluene is very sparingly soluble in the cold, has a Such a great ability to select for those substances which in their totality after the present process, the so-called liquid trinitrotoluene provide that at a only crystallization the 2 · 4 · 6 -trinitrotoluene almost chemically pure, the distillation residues on the other hand, can be obtained in liquid form. Meanwhile, mixtures of alcohol and benzene are also alcohol and ligroin, benzene and ligroin are suitable. The pure benzene hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylene have in the cold a relatively large dissolving power for: 2 · 4-ö-trinitrotoluene, are therefore initially not as suitable as alcohol and the like purpose to obtain useful residues.
It is now known that mixtures of several substances are relatively low melt, and that the melting point 4η of a substance by a relatively low The addition of one with a lower melting point can significantly reduce it.
However, that the melting point of a mixture of aromatic nitro bodies is around 50 ° and is more lower than the melting points of the individual components are examples not yet known. The melting points of the individual nitro bodies in the so-called liquid trinitrotoluene can occur, lie between 48 ° and 112 °. in the the isomers are essential. Trinitrotoluenes, whose melting point is 81 °, 104 ° and ii2 ° lie; besides can also the numerous isomeric dinitrotoluenes occur in smaller quantities, of which only the 2 · 5-dinitrotoluene melts at 48 °, while the other 5 isomers between 60 and melt at 92 °.
Auf der anderen Seite läßt sich nach dem beschriebenen Verfahren ein sogenanntes flüssiges Trinitrotoluol herstellen, welches bei Zimmertemperatur flüssig ist und unter Umständen einen Erstarrungspunkt von wesentlich unterOn the other hand, a so-called liquid can be produced according to the method described Produce trinitrotoluene, which is liquid at room temperature and possibly a freezing point of substantially below
io° aufweist. If you consider, on the other hand, that z. B. that of the chemical Industrial large-scale industrial dinitrotoluene, which is a mixture of mainly 2 4-dinitrotoluene (melting point 70 °) and 2 5-pinitrotoluene (melting point 48 °) represents, has a melting point which is between the melting point of the components is that also the melting point of the crude
Ein flüssiges aromatisches Nitroprodukt von den eigenartigen Eigenschaften des beschriebenen (hoher Stickstoffgehalt und große Kraftleistung als Sprengstoff) ist bislang nicht bekannt geworden.ίο technical trinitrotoluene, which consists of a Mixture of mainly 2 · 4 · 6 -trinitrotoluene (melting point 81 °) with others Isomers and smaller amounts of the above-mentioned dinitrotoluenes consists between 70 and 80 °, i.e. close to the melting points of the components, it must be unexpected and surprisingly, that a mixture of aromatic nitro bodies, which for the most part consists of essentially higher melting components, has such a low melting point. A liquid aromatic nitro product of the peculiar properties of the described (high nitrogen content and large Power as an explosive) has not yet become known.
By producing the same, there is in particular the possibility of removing the distillation residues, which previously represented a worthless and at the same time not harmless waste product, to utilize profitably, since it does not both possess explosive properties and cannot be used as an explosive can, as well as its property, make a good gelatine with collodion wool to form an excellent basis for the production of plastic explosives of all kinds.
Im folgenden sind Versuchsbeispiele für die Herstellung des flüssigen Trinitrotoluols angegeben :Experimental examples for the preparation of the liquid trinitrotoluene are given below :
