The invention relates to a method for producing electrodes for collector batteries.
The procedure is as follows:
Sodium hydroxide is used to precipitate ferrohydroxide from a solution of iron sulfate in a manner known per se. This hydroxide, in the form of a slurry, is immediately pumped into a filter press and washed to remove sodium sulfate. After taking them out of the filter press, these solid, moist cakes made of washed ferrohydroxide are quickly placed in vessels and tightly sealed so that they are protected from the effects of the atmospheric air. The contents or part of the contents of these vessels is then thrown into an iron cylinder with an airtight lid. There is a small air hole at the top of the cylinder. This cylinder and its contents are now slowly heated in a gas oven until all the water has been driven out in the form of steam. The temperature is then increased until the cylinder reaches a faint red heat, in order to bring about the transformation of the iron hydroxide into iron monoxide. The air hole is then closed and the cylinder and its contents are cooled down.
The iron monoxide mass obtained in this way can be briquetted by itself. Preferably however, it becomes previously with about half its weight in nickel or cobalt hydrate or with an equivalent amount of any other suitable reducible Compound of these metals or the finely divided metals themselves mixed. she can also in the same proportion with finely divided iron, as for example with the gray variety of iron obtained by reduction by means of hydrogen. ' Finally, it is also possible to mix the iron monoxide mass with about a quarter of its weight in cadmium oxide or use an equivalent amount of the finely divided metal. By the briquetting produced panels can be of any suitable size and shape, so that they can be placed in the relevant opening or pocket or in the box of the cover for the electrode of the accumulator battery can be used. The emerging Mass is like iron monoxide produced by other known processes in the case of an alkaline one Accumulator battery suitable for the electrode that reduces during charging is and is also extremely active and effective.
