Abstract

Information storage card or foil provided with a transparent, colourless, magnetisable coating is improved in that the coating consists of (1) a transparent, colourless polymer matrix having an index of refraction between 1.3 and 1.6; and (2) 10-60 wt. % of a particulate, crystalline disperse phase having an index of refraction corresp. to that of the polymeric matrix and consisting of a crystalline reaction product. The reaction product is obtained from (a) 20-60% of a cpd. contd. ferromagnetic atoms; (b) 0.1-5% of TiO2 and/or ZrO2; (c) 0.05-2.5 of an inorganic fluoride; and (d) a glass-forming matrix (balance to 100 wt. %). The ferromagnetic atoms aer Gd(pref. Dy, Tb, Ho or Tm. The glass forming matrix contains inorganic oxide(s), phosphate, borate and/or fluoride. The fluoride is Ca(pref.), Mg, Ba and/or Sr fluoride. This compsn. is used in the cases when the colouration of a magnetisable material is objectionable (Fe3+ brown, Cr3+ Green), e.g. for the prepn. of credit cards. The cards can be provided with photographs. The pref. Gd2O3 has a considerable magnetic moment. The pref. polymeric matrix consists of PVC, polyvinylidene chloride, acrylic polymers, polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate and cellulose acetate-butysate, etc.
