Abstract

A heart pacemaker of the usual kind provides a stimulus pulse, which initiates not only a heart cycle but also an interval during which the input circuits of electrocardiographs which use the same electrode within the heart, are overloaded, and their outputs accordingly cease to communicate meaning. In particular, this interval (250-300 ms) is too long to permit the use of the adaptive pacemaker, which responds to the momentary state of the heart muscle, and cannot do without information about it for so long. A control circuit is included in the output stage of the usual simpler pacemaker, with the effect of reducing the blacked-out interval to about 40 ms.
