Abstract

Apparatus for localising metal foreign bodies in the eye comprises an oscillator (10), a protective resistor (11) and a transmitting coil (12) with a suitable number of windings and geometry which together form a field probe to which is connected an amplifier (14), a rectifier (15), an indicator (16) and optionally a receiving coil (13). The coils may have field-conducting sheaths, and may contain magnetically conducting materials, e.g. ferrite cores. The field probe with attached components may be attached to a conventional gripping coil. The transmitting coil may form a branch of a measuring bridge, approach to the foreign body causing a change in inductance in the coil which renders the bridge out of tune.
