Bekanntlich leiden Streichinstrumente oft an dem Ubelstande, daß sich sogenannte schlechte Töne, welche durch ungleiche, zu starke Schwingungen und Knotenbildungen in der Mitte des Bodens hervorgerufen werdet, in vielen Fällen nicht beseitigen lassen, und zwar zeigt sich dieser Übelstand am häufigsten bei den Violoncelli. Dieses Stäbchen wird im Innern des Instrumentes unter dem Baßbalken, und zwar oberhalb des Steges angebracht, wobei sich seine genaue Lage nach den schlechten Tönen richtet. Es wird dabei dem Stäbchen eine der Klangfarbe des Instrumentes entsprechende Stärke gegeben, worauf es den schlechten Tönen entsprechend von außen wie eine Stimme eingestellt wird.
