Abstract
Musical instrument, characterized in that a second series of sound surfaces with a total of 13 sound fields mounted on the instrument. This second set of sound surfaces can be mounted together with the existing sound surfaces on the upper sphere. Preferably, however, recruited in the context of the new invention, the lower sphere for recruiting the new sound surfaces.
Description
Die chromatische HandpanThe chromatic handpan
Beschreibungdescription
The Handpan is a musical instrument developed in the 90s of this century, formed from two spherical halves of thin steel. The Handpan (also called Steelpan or Hang) is a recent development of the traditionally made of oil barrels from Trinidat / Tobago. The Handpan can be played as percussion instrument as the Steeldrums with flails, in most cases, however, it is directly recorded with the hands , In all currently available Handpans the tuned sound fields are introduced on the upper, convexly curved half. The lower half consists of a passive sound box. During production, sounding sound fields are isolated and tuned by hammering on the convex surface of the upper sphere. This usually results in a pentatonic or scale-based mood. The range is limited by the few (usually eight) existing sound fields. The handpan is usually played on the floor in a sitting position ("cross-legged").
Probleme der aktuellen Handpans:Problems of the current handpans:
The range is limited by the few playing surfaces. In order to play in different keys, different, differently tuned Handpans must be used, which is very uncomfortable for the musician when playing, expensive at the purchase, and for the transport and the stage construction is very expensive.
- 2) Das Spielen im Sitzen (meist Schneidersitz) ist nicht immer ergonomisch angenehm und bringt vom Aspekt her ein eher esotherisches Image mit sich, was nicht von jedem Musiker gewünscht ist.2) Playing while sitting (mostly cross-legged) is not always ergonomically comfortable and brings with it a rather esoteric image, which is not desired by every musician.
The lower spherical half of the Handpan is not used as a playing surface, but remains passive and serves only as a support and resonance amplifier by the presence of a central outlet opening.
- 1) The range of the handpan is fully extended by the current invention to all 13 available semitones (chromatic handpan).
- 2) This can be achieved by additionally mounted on the upper sphere playing surfaces, or preferably by converting the previously passive lower sphere into a fully playable surface.
- 3) By establishing the lower sphere as a playing surface, it is now possible to mount the Handpan in a stand. Thus, a more uniform radiation of the sounds generated by the upper and lower spheres into the room becomes possible.
- 4) The musician now has a more upbeat, enjoyable way of playing. The more neutral standing avoids the esoteric character of the previously necessary cross-legged seat.
