Desinfizierende oder antiseptische Mittel enthalten regelmäßig mikrobiozide Wirkstoffe, d. h. chemische Substanzen, die Mikroorganismen abtöten. Je nach Art der abzutötenden Mikroorganismen werden die einzelnen Mittel unterteilt in: viruzid (gegen Viren), bakterizid (gegen Bakterien) oder fungizid (gegen Pilze). So gibt es zwischenzeitlich auch schon rückfettende Hygieneprodukte, die eine mikrobiozide Wirkung, insbesondere eine bakterizide, viruzide und fungizide Wirkung haben und bei Anwendung vor der Verbreitung von Mikroorganismen schützen. Titanium Dioxid besitzt gemäß INCI-Verzeichnis die CAS Nr. 13463-67-7. Der mikrobiozide Wirkstoff kann ein Alkohol sein. Vorteilhafter Weise wird als mikrobiozider Wirkstoff Ethanol verwendet.
