The aromatherapy is based primarily on the application or application of essential oils, which contain numerous volatile or volatile fragrances based on phytochemicals with different effects on the body. Overall, there are a variety of different essential oils from different plants. Accordingly, different effects can be achieved with the aid of various essential oils or the fragrances contained therein. Essential oils can have an effect on the physiology as well as on the psychology of persons or patients.

The disadvantage, however, is that essential oils are generally offered as individual oils, but not as combination or complex preparations. The large variety of essential oils offered with different effects is unmanageable for the patient or consumer and requires the involvement of a specialist or aromatherapist for effective therapy. Overall, there are hardly any concepts for the provision of aroma oil preparations or compositions which are already ready for use and can be used in a targeted manner for the treatment of individual diseases.

The performance of aromatherapy or the use of essential oils is extremely diverse. One possibility, for example, is to apply the aroma oils or essential oils directly to the skin, which is sometimes combined with (aromatic oil) massages. However, the direct application of essential oils to the skin does not always lead to the desired effect. In particular, side effects such as skin irritation or allergic reactions may occur. In addition, the effectiveness when applied to the skin is not always optimal or too low.

Often it is also intended to apply an aromatherapy in the manner of a steam bath, d. H. Fill a bowl with hot water along with essential oils and inhale the rising vapors, preferably with a towel over your head. This method is on the one hand in handling relatively uncomfortable, on the other hand, the vapors can get into the eyes, so that the mucous membranes of the eyes are sometimes irritated. In addition, there is the danger of scalding from the hot water.

Furthermore, aromatherapy can also take place via the room air, for example by setting up aroma lamps, which are charged with the respective aroma oil or essential oil. This method is often characterized by too low efficiency. Moreover, it is not always desired that the whole room or the room air is enriched with the fragrances of the essential oils. It is also problematic or impractical that such aromatherapy can not be independent of location.

In the context of the present invention, it has thus been possible to provide ready-to-use and conveniently administrable complex or combination preparations based on essential oils for the targeted aromatherapy-based treatment of selected diseases.

Advantageously, the inventive concepts for the application of the compositions according to the invention are characterized by the fact that no or at least substantially no side effects occur, but nevertheless an excellent efficiency is ensured. Due to the inhalation pen, the compositions can be brought in a high concentration very close to the nose or the receptors of the nasal mucosa, in particular the site of action, without, however, resulting in a direct contact of the skin or mucous membrane with the essential oils. Allergic reactions and skin irritation can be avoided in this way. Furthermore, there is not the problem due to the use of an inhalation pen, which occurs, for example, when using fragrance lamps, namely that the active ingredients or fragrances of the essential oils are distributed throughout the room. EXAMPLES

In the context of the application and efficacy studies carried out by the applicant, the influence of various inhalation sticks according to the invention with respect to different medical or psychosomatic indications was investigated.

To carry out the following application studies, an inhalation pen according to the invention was used, as described above and in particular also in US Pat 1 to 6 is shown.

Cellulose filters or cellulose acetate filters having a size of 38 mm in length and 8 mm in thickness were used as storage means for the composition according to the invention used in each case, which were sold by IVF Hartmann AG, Neuhausen, Switzerland or Filtrona Porous Technologies, Yverdon-les -bains, Switzerland, are available. The storage medium in the inhalation sticks according to the invention was charged in each case according to the relevant method according to the invention with 0.8 ml of the compositions according to the invention.

1. Inhalation pen with a combination of aromatic oils of lavender oil, vetiver oil and tangerine oil

The inhalation pen according to the invention contained 0.8 ml of a composition according to the invention for test purposes, which contained 35% by weight of lavender oil, 35% by weight of vetiver oil and 30% by weight of tangerine oil, in each case based on the active ingredient composition. In the context of the Applicant's application studies, the influence of this combination of essential oils according to the invention on the cardiovascular system of persons suffering from chronic stress was investigated. As comparison served an inventive inhalation pen without essential oils ("placebo pencil"). In addition, for comparative purposes, it was determined how strong the influence of the scientifically recognized relaxation technique of Jacobson's progressive muscle relaxation on the cardiovascular system.

For this purpose, a panel of 90 persons, of whom 66 were female and 24 male, with an age in the range of 18 to 65 years was used. Subjects were admitted to the study as eligible for the criterion of elevated chronic stress levels. In order not to falsify the results obtained, medical-clinical diagnoses, such as blood pressure diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, drug or drug dependence, epileptic seizures, pregnancy, mental illnesses and acute colds were excluded in the subjects.

The study design was based on a placebo-controlled, randomized, three-arm, repeated-length exploration study. Subjects were tested individually, with a total study duration of 45 min. The study began with the reception of the subjects at time t ₀ .

After 12 minutes at time t ₁₂ , the subjects assessed their current state of well-being by means of a questionnaire to be completed.

The questionnaire contained 20 adjectives relating to the well-being, comprising both positive and negative affects, whereby the respondents assessed on a four-level scale whether the adjectives "not at all", "hardly", "something" or "very" were true. Values in the range of 20 to 80 could be achieved in the assessment, with "80" representing the most positive well-being and "20" the most negative well-being.

Subsequently, the blood pressure and the heart rate were determined after 15 to 20 minutes with the aid of automatic oscillometric upper arm measuring devices (Hartmann, Heidenheim, Germany).

25 minutes after the start of the study, the 10-minute intervention was performed at time t _25-35 . As described below, the intervention differed depending on the group of subjects:

a) control group (comparison)

The intervention in the control group was that the subjects received placebo inhalation sticks which were identical in shape and size to the inhalation sticks of the present invention but did not receive any perfumes. The placebo inhalation pen was administered 3 times with an interstimulus interval of 3 minutes.

b) Group "Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) according to Jacobson" (comparison)

During the intervention, subjects were instructed to sequentially tense and release certain body muscles sequentially. The scheme was done "from bottom to top". Thighs, buttocks, back, arms and shoulders were alternately tensed, after which the actual relaxation was performed, d. H. all the aforementioned muscle parts were strained simultaneously for 10 seconds each. Towards the end of each strain, the subjects were encouraged to intensify the tension. Overall, the subjects underwent three tension cycles with a respective two-minute inter-stimulus interval.

c) Group Inhalation Pen with Aromatic Oil Composition (Invention)

The application of the inhalation pen according to the invention with the composition according to the invention was carried out lying in a relaxed body position. The subjects placed the inhalation pen under one nostril and closed the other nostril with one finger. The subjects breathed once deeply, the composition of the invention or the fragrances contained therein were held for a short time in the nose and then exhaled through the mouth again. The inhalation pen was administered three times with an interstimulus interval of 3 minutes.

At the completion of the intervention, measurements of blood pressure and heart rate were made again at t _36-41 . At the time t ₄₂ , the subjectively perceived condition of the subjects was determined again by the questionnaire was filled a second time. After 45 minutes at time t ₄₅ , the study was completed.

Results

Below are the results of the study in terms of mood, heart rate and blood pressure before and after each intervention by all groups of volunteers.

The average values obtained in the individual groups as well as the related standard deviation are indicated. In terms of systolic blood pressure, the effect was greatest in the subject group who received the inhalation pen. Systolic blood pressure had decreased by an average of 11.86 mm Hg after the intervention. By contrast, there was no significant reduction in blood pressure in the control group. Also in terms of lowering diastolic blood pressure, the effect was greatest in the subject group receiving the inhalation pen. Surprisingly, it has also been shown with regard to the feeling that in the groups of subjects who had applied the inhalation stick, the state of well-being could be increased significantly already after a short intervention interval of 10 minutes or after three times application of the inhalation pen. It was particularly surprising in this context that even the scientifically recognized relaxation process of progressive muscle relaxation caused no significant increase in well-being, but the result was comparable to the control group. That With the inhalation pen according to the invention an increase in well-being can be achieved, which surpasses even scientifically accepted relaxation techniques, was not expected.

Overall, therefore, the analysis of the abovementioned measured values shows significant differences before and after the experimental intervention between the individual groups. Both in terms of physical factors, d. H. a reduction in blood pressure and heart rate, as well as in terms of psychological factors, d. H. The increase in well-being, can be achieved with an inhalation pen according to the invention, which contains a composition according to the invention based on lavender oil, vetiver oil and tangerine oil, the best results.

Inhalation pens of the aforementioned type are thus in an excellent way, associated with chronic stress symptoms of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and palpitations, and psychosomatic symptoms such as fatigue, listlessness and fatigue, on a low side effects, preferably side effects, and moreover in handling extremely comfortable way to handle.

Results

The results of the study, which are based on the condition, the heart rate, the cortisol level and the blood pressure before and after each intervention by all groups of volunteers, are listed below.

The average values obtained in the individual groups as well as the related standard deviation are indicated. The examination of the cortisone level has also shown that the use of the inhalation pen according to the invention has a positive effect on the relief of stress-associated symptoms. In the group of subjects who had used the inhalation stick according to the invention with the aroma oil composition, the greatest decrease of the cortisol content in the saliva could be recorded. By contrast, the control group did not show any decrease in the cortisone level. In the group of subjects who had used the progressive muscle relaxation, the decrease in cortisol was also significantly lower than in the group of subjects who had applied the inhalation pen according to the invention. Surprisingly, it has also been shown with regard to the state of mind or well-being that in the subjects who had applied the inhalation pen, the state of well-being could be significantly increased already after a short intervention interval of 10 minutes or after three times application of the inhalation pen. It was particularly surprising in this context that even the scientifically recognized relaxation process of progressive muscle relaxation caused no significant increase in well-being, but was comparable to the result of the control group.

Overall, therefore, the analysis of the abovementioned measured values shows significant differences before and after the experimental intervention between the individual groups. Both in terms of physical factors, d. H. a reduction in blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisone level, as well as psychological and psychological factors, d. H. Also, inhalation sticks with a composition according to the invention based on bergamot oil, lemon oil, cedarwood oil, clary sage oil and vetiver oil are thus excellently suited for the chronic stress-related symptoms of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and palpitations, as well as psychosomatic symptoms such as fatigue, listlessness and fatigue , to treat a low side effect, especially side effect free, and also extremely comfortable to handle manner.

3. Inhalation pen with a combination of aromatic oils of peppermint oil and grapefruit oil

The inhalation stick according to the invention contained for test purposes 0.8 ml of a composition according to the invention which contained 50% by weight of peppermint oil and 50% by weight of grapefruit oil, in each case based on the composition. As part of the Applicant's application studies, the influence of this inventive combination of essential oils on weight reduction was investigated. As a comparison served an inventive inhalation pen, which contained only lavender oil ("placebo pencil").

For this purpose, a panel of 40 persons, of whom 28 were female and 12 male, with an age in the range of 24 to 61 years was used. Subjects were admitted on condition that their BMI (Body Mass Index) was between 20 and 35. In addition, medical-clinical diagnoses, such as blood pressure diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, drug or drug dependence, epileptic seizures, pregnancy or mental illness were excluded in the subjects.

Study design:

The study design was based on a placebo-controlled, randomized prospective documentation study. The study totaled a period of 30 days with the subjects applying either the inhalation stick or the placebo pin of the invention several times daily. The administration of the inhalation sticks was as follows: All subjects applied the respectively to be tested inhalation pen 3 to 5 times about 5 to 10 minutes before each food intake. In addition, 3 to 5 inhalations were given every 2 hours. In order not to influence the motivation or tension of the subjects, they should not weigh themselves at home during the study. In addition, the subjects did not make any changes to their remaining life-style or lifestyle so as not to distort the effect of the inhalation sticks. In particular, the subjects neither increased their exercise nor restricted their calorie intake or changed their eating habits.

In order to analyze the influence of the inhalation sticks on weight loss, the subjects were weighed before the start of the study and after 30 days.

In addition, the subjects participated in a final survey, in which they were asked about the perceived subjective effects of the inhalation sticks.

Results:

The study results in terms of weight before and after the study are listed below by all subjects. In addition, the results in relation to the final survey are explained in detail below.

Table 13 below shows the results of measuring the weight of the subjects at the beginning and at the end of the study. The average values obtained in the individual groups as well as the related standard deviation are indicated. As the foregoing shows, the mere application of the inhalation pen of the present invention, without concomitant weight-loss measures, such as diet modification or exercise, resulted in significantly greater weight reduction than was the case for the placebo stick containing only lavender oil.

In addition, the final survey showed that the subjects who had used the inhalation stick according to the invention had felt less hungry during the period of the study and had overall tended to eat less. In the control group, which on average had decreased significantly less than the group of probands with the inhalation pen according to the invention, significantly fewer subjects stated that they had been less hungry during the experimental period or had tended to eat less.

Overall, it has been shown in the context of the studies that the application of an inhalation pen according to the invention with the abovementioned aroma oil combination based on peppermint oil and grapefruit oil already leads to a weight reduction without additional supporting measures relating to nutrition and sport. Thus, inhalation sticks according to the invention can be used alone for weight reduction, but also represent a useful supplement to diets and dietary changes.

4. Inhalation pen with a combination of aromatic oils of peppermint oil, rosemary oil and lavender oil

The inhalation stick according to the invention contained for test purposes 0.8 ml of a composition according to the invention which contained 60% by weight of peppermint oil, 30% by weight of rosemary oil and 10% by weight of lavender oil, in each case based on the composition. In the context of the application studies carried out by the applicant, the influence of the abovementioned combination of essential oils according to the invention on menstrual pain and complaints of women was investigated.

For this purpose, a group of 30 women aged 18 to 50 years was consulted. Subjects were admitted to the study as having regular menses and at least severe menstrual cramps. In addition, they were not allowed to take any prescription medication to alleviate the monthly pain. Non-prescription medications such as commercial analgesics, however, were allowed.

Study Procedure:

The study design provided that the subjects observed their pain or discomfort over two menstrual cycles, but only used the inhalation pen of the invention for one cycle. In addition, the subjects were able to take their usual remedial action as needed during both cycles. The inhalation pen according to the invention could thus also be used, so to speak, as an add-on for pain and complaint visualization.

The inhalation pen was used every 10 minutes during the acute phase of discomfort or pain. Each application was inhaled 10 times deep at the inhalation pen.

The subjects were instructed to document the subjectively perceived pain intensity during the acute phases of the discomfort as well as the condition during both cycles and to compare the two cycles.

Results:

With regard to the intensity of pain it has been shown that all subjects could further alleviate the pain by the additional use of the inhalation pen according to the invention. In particular, the studies have shown that the use of the inhalation pen causes the rest as well measures taken, such as the intake of commercial analgesics or thermal therapies, can be significantly improved in their effectiveness.
