Im Bereich der Wild-/Nutztiere sind solche Kennzeichnungen aufgrund teils gesetzlicher Vorschriften weiter aber auch nicht vollumfänglich geregelt und verbreitet. Diese Identifikation ist u. a. insbesondere in dem Fall wichtig, wenn ein Tier unbeabsichtigt von seinem Eigentümer getrennt wird, und entweder durch den Eigentümer selbst wieder gefunden oder durch Dritte wieder zu dem Eigentümer zurückgegeben werden soll. Die physisch eindeutige Identifikationsmöglichkeit ist aber auch in anderen Fällen hilfreich, wie beispielsweise wenn dem Tier eine Profilseite (Micro-Website) in einem Internet-Portal zugewiesen wird, auf der vom Eigentümer – ähnlich z. B. einem „Sozialen Netzwerk” – öffentliche sowie private Daten zu dem Tier hinterlegt bzw. anderen Personen zur Ansicht freigegeben werden können.
