Description
1. Technisches Gebiet1. Technical area
B. Nockendrehverschlüsse und Press-on/Twist-off®-Verschlüsse eignen.The present invention relates to vials for food or beverages stored at room temperature (about 20 ° C) or below, especially at about 4 ° C (refrigerator temperature). It also relates to compounds that can be used as sealing material in vascular occlusions under such conditions. More particularly, the invention relates to such compositions, which are for aufdrehbare (and possibly recloseable) vessel closures or vacuum closures such. B. cam locks and press-on / twist-off ® locks are suitable.
2. Hintergrund der Erfindung2. Background of the invention
For a long time sealing materials have been used in the packaging industry for vascular occlusions containing polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
However, the use of PVC-containing compositions in packaging materials is generally undesirable for a variety of reasons. For example, the incineration of household waste from halogenated plastics creates acidic gases that are harmful to the atmosphere. In addition, even small amounts of PVC interfere with the material recycling of plastic waste. Moreover, PVC-based sealing elements require the use of plasticizers, which may possibly migrate into the food contained in the vessel and are therefore of concern for health reasons.
The present invention therefore relates to PVC-free sealing materials (hereinafter also referred to as polymer compound) for vascular occlusions, in particular for the packaging of foodstuffs.
Foods (including beverages such as juices and the like) are often packaged in glass or plastic containers, which in many cases then have a screw cap. The screw cap is representative of vascular occlusions which are in a threaded engagement with the vessel in the filled and closed state. To open the vessel, the closure must be rotated against it, whereby the seal of the closure stands out from the edge of the vessel and the - often - existing vacuum in the vessel is lifted. The closure can be separated from the vessel by such a rotation. The known PVC-containing sealing materials have the necessary processing and use properties. It should therefore be noted that a PVC-free sealant is only a commercially interesting sealing material for vascular occlusions, if the PVC-free sealant has specific physico-chemical properties that are not inferior to those of PVC-containing sealing materials in essential properties.
Weitere Anforderungen solche Dichtungsmaterialien umfassen beispielsweise folgende Aspekte:
- - The material composition should be chosen so that undesirable substances are avoided. Therefore, the sealing material should not contain substances that are classified as hazardous to health, especially plasticizers such. Phthalates; Semicarbazide and its sources, especially ADC and OBSH; 2-ethylhexanoic acid and its sources; organotin compounds; primary aromatic amines; Bisphenols, nonylphenol; BADGE; Photoinitiators; perhalogenated compounds; Melamine. For some applications, the presence of larger levels of (at RT) liquid substances is undesirable. Then, the content of such substances (such as white oil) should be limited to a maximum of 10%, preferably less, and in some cases, the sealing material should have no detectable levels of such liquid substances. This is especially true for the filling of fatty foods. The material composition should be selected so that the sealing material also meets demanding requirements when used. For some applications, the sealing material should have a barrier function, thus reducing or preventing the ingress of undesirable substances into the vessel. For special applications, it should be possible to provide the sealing material with absorbent additives (eg oxygen absorber) or other scavenger substances.
- - The sealing material must have the required processing properties. In principle, it must be sufficiently thermally softened to be able to be used on customary processing machines (in particular in the injection molding process, but also for extrusion with subsequent stamping or compression molding). Nevertheless, it must have the required sealing properties after being introduced into the vessel closure and cooling down to the desired application temperature (usually room temperature, but possibly also at lower temperatures, eg in the cooling rack). For small vascular occlusions, the sealing material must also be able to be incorporated over the whole area. For PT caps (Press-on Twist- off® caps), the gasket material must form both the gasket and the internal thread of the cap, and must therefore (as a so-called "contoured ring") can be applied to both the inner surface and the skirt of the cap, and can form the mechanically (sufficiently stable) threaded elements when pressing the cap. For some applications, the sealing material should be able to be molded "out of shell," ie, outside the closure to the gasket insert, which is then inserted into the vessel closure as a finished gasket or the like. The sealing material should be particularly suitable for metal closures, and metal-plastic composites, which may be internally painted, but it should also be suitable for plastic closures.
- - The sealing material must be suitable for common food packaging. The gasket should have sufficient vacuum retention even in the cold. The gasket should be suitable for common vessels made of metal, plastic, glass, etc. In contact with the contents, especially in fatty foods and other products with (compared to water) lipophilic character, the gasket should deliver no or as few components to the contents, and should also absorb any lipophilic constituents from the product. The gasket must have sufficiently low orifice values to allow adequate removal of the vessel occlusion (if necessary with cooling). At the same time, the gasket must demonstrate its sealing effect over the intended service life (minimum shelf life) of the food.
3. Zusammenfassung der Erfindung3. Summary of the invention
Dichtungsmasse) eingesetzt.In general, according to the invention, polymer compounds (also referred to here as compositions) are used as sealing material (or sealing compound).
In general, a sealing material according to the invention comprises a mixture of chemically different components, which typically comprises at least two different polymers and further constituents, such as lubricants, stabilizers and optionally further constituents, which serve to set the desired performance properties.
Particularities arise in the case of foods which are stored at room temperature (RT, eg 20 ° C.) or cooled (eg 4 ° C.) and are usually not pasteurized or sterilized. These can be fatty or low-fat or fat-free foods. Such foods can z. B. cold filled and cooled to consumption, but they also include products that are filled at RT or even hot, but subsequently stored at RT or cooled. They include products in vessels in which a vacuum is created by negative pressure or by means of cooling steam.
Beispiele solcher Lebensmittel sind:
- 1. Joghurt & Desserts: fetthaltig, kalt abzufüllen, ggf. Vakuum, Transport und Lagerung in der Kühlkette;
- 2. Käse in Öl (z. B. Feta): fetthaltig, kalt oder bei RT abzufüllen, ggf. Vakuum, Transport und Lagerung in der Kühlkette;
- 3. Fisch in Öl (z. B. Seelachsersatz): fetthaltig, kalt abzufüllen, ggf. Vakuum, Transport und Lagerung in der Kühlkette;
- 4. Senf: fetthaltig im Sinne der VO (EU) 10/2011, Abfüllung bis ca. 50°C, ggf. Vakuum, Transport und Lagerung bei Raumtemperatur;
- 5. Konfitüre: fettfrei, heiß abzufüllen, ggf. Vakuum, Transport und Lagerung bei Raumtemperatur;
- 6. Mayonnaise: fetthaltig, kalt abzufüllen, ggf. Vakuum, Transport und Lagerung bei Raumtemperatur;
- 1. yoghurt & desserts: fat, cold fill, if necessary vacuum, transport and storage in the cold chain;
- 2. Cheese in oil (eg feta): Fatty, cold or bottled at RT, vacuum if necessary, transport and storage in the cold chain;
- 3. fish in oil (eg salmon substitute): fat-containing, cold fill, if necessary vacuum, transport and storage in the cold chain;
- 4. Mustard: fatty according to VO (EU) 10/2011, filling up to approx. 50 ° C, possibly vacuum, transport and storage at room temperature;
- 5. Jam: grease-free, hot filling, if necessary vacuum, transport and storage at room temperature;
- 6. mayonnaise: fat, cold fill, if necessary vacuum, transport and storage at room temperature;
Vascular closures for these applications are usually screw caps, such. B. cam twist locks. Such closures are opened by twisting the closure relative to the vessel, whereby the seal insert must slide on the edge of the vessel with which it forms the seal. The closure is lifted off the edge of the vessel and any existing vacuum is broken. In such applications, the gasket must in addition to the above-mentioned requirements easy opening of the vessel even at low temperatures, eg. B. when stored in refrigerators allow. An essential criterion for this is the opening value, which represents the maximum torque required for unscrewing the closure (ie when opening the vessel).
Other parameters that can be used to characterize suitable sealing materials are their Shore A hardness and compression set (DVR), both specifically at 20 ° C and 4 ° C, and the stress loss in the creep test (25% compression at 70 ° C , then free cooling), as will be described below.
The vascular occlusions under consideration are used at temperatures (RT and below, up to about 0 ° C) where conventional oil and PVC-free sealing materials are too hard and too inelastic and show too high aperture values. The closures according to the invention are much better in terms of the (lower) hardness and elasticity (DVR) of the sealing material, as well as their opening value at low temperatures.
The invention provides polymer compounds as sealing materials that enable these physical properties.
The objects underlying the present invention are achieved by the PVC-free sealing materials defined in the independent claims. Advantageous embodiments are defined in subclaims.
B. in unserer älteren Anmeldung
The embodiments according to the invention containing little or no oil are in principle suitable for all applications in the field of the invention. The oily embodiments are preferably not used in fatty fillers.
The PVC-free compositions according to the invention can be rendered sufficiently flowable by heating. Only then can the sealant be applied by extrusion or a similar method in the region of the sealing element to be produced (also referred to as seal or gasket insert) on the vascular closure blank.
Subsequently, the applied on the inside of the vessel closure PVC-free composition can be formed mechanically to the desired sealing element. After cooling, the applied composition can maintain its shape and in the closed state sealingly abut the opening of the container to be closed with the vessel closure.
The PVC-free composition can preferably be used in the production of any type of vascular occlusions, such as, for example, the manufacture of seals in cam latches, screw lids, rotatable crown corks, bottle screw caps and Press-on Twist- off® closures.
- • easy to work with,
- • enables fast throughputs in industrial production,
- • can be used for filling and / or storage at RT and cooling,
- • can be used even with greasy products
- • is largely or entirely based on uncrosslinked polymers and wholly or at least substantially free of substances of health concern (such as plasticizers and the like),
- • is inexpensive, and / or
- • allows the production of vascular occlusions which, in the closed state, exhibit a gas barrier effect, an overpressure valve effect and / or a vacuum retention.
4. Definitionen4. Definitions
In the context of the present invention, the term "PVC-free composition" means a composition which is less than 1% by weight, preferably less than 0.5% by weight, more preferably less than 0.1% by weight or less at most 1% and, most preferably, within the analytical limits of determination, no PVC at all (based on the total weight of the PVC-free composition). In the context of the present invention, as "PVC-free compositions", only those compositions are considered that can be used as sealants in vascular occlusions. For example, a hot melt adhesive or a clean Polymer in the context of the present invention, no "PVC-free composition", even if no PVC is included therein.
In the context of the present invention, the term "plastic" refers to a material comprising at least one synthetic or semi-synthetic polymer.
In the context of the present invention, the term "block copolymer" refers to a copolymer consisting of longer sequences or blocks of each monomer (e.g., AAAAAAAAABBBBBBBBBBBB ...). More specifically, according to the invention, so-called "statistical multiblock resins" are used, as available from DOW Chemical Co. under the name "Infuse".
In the context of the present invention, the term "random copolymer" refers to a copolymer having random distribution of the monomers, more particularly a copolymer of the kind available from DOW Chemical Co. under the name "Engage".
In the context of the invention, a TPO is understood to mean an olefin-based thermoplastic elastomer (TPE-O); by a TPS is meant a styrenic block polymer (TPE-S).
Raumtemperatur ist im Kontext der Erfindung generell etwa 20°C.Room temperature is generally about 20 ° C in the context of the invention.
5. Testverfahren für physikalische Parameter5. Test method for physical parameters
The opening value for the purposes of the present invention is the maximum torque required to open the sealed vessel by rotating the vessel closure.
The opening value is determined by means of a torque transducer into which the closed vessel is inserted and then opened manually or (semi) automatically. A suitable device is available, for example, from Steinfurth under the name "Torque Measuring System TMS 5000".
For this test, vessels of the type for which the closure is intended are selected to be representative of the quality of their mouth (edge regularity, etc.). The vessels are preferably filled with the contents for which they are intended, alternatively with water or vegetable oil. The level in the vessel corresponds to the level in the intended use. These vessels are then closed as intended with the vials to be tested, the vacuum on the amount of steam used, its water content and its temperature and the remaining head space is set above the contents. Alternatively, the vacuum can also be generated in a chamber via pumps. In this chamber, the closure is then placed and closed by a rotary motion. In the case of "mechanically" generated vacuum typically values of -0.3 bar, obtained in steam-sealed vessels -0.6 bar.
If aperture values are treated in this description, they always refer to vessels evacuated in such a way at a vacuum of about -0.5 bar.
Die Gefäße werden nachfolgend bei 4°C gelagert.The vessels are subsequently stored at 4 ° C.
Since the opening value frequently rises initially at a constant storage temperature and then drops back to a stable value, the opening value was determined after the corresponding storage period. Typically, an initial value was determined immediately, followed by measurements at 1, 2, 5, 7, and 14 days, 4 weeks, and 3 months. Within 4 weeks usually a constant value arose.
The measurements were carried out in parallel on several vessels (usually at least 10, better up to 40 vessels), so that an average value could be formed from the measurement data. The opening values given in this description are mean values of at least 10 vessels, in which the vacuum was set to about 0.5 bar underpressure, and after storage at 4 ° C. over the number of days stated in the exemplary embodiment.
The diameter of the vascular occlusions was 70 mm. Preferably, according to the invention, the opening value in inches.lbs. Is at most half the diameter of the closure in mm, that is, at 70 mm in diameter, ie at a maximum of about 35 in. Lbs. For other diameters, the opening value according to the invention results according to the same formula.
The permitted range of variation is preferably at most 20% of the mean, ie. H. at a mean aperture value of 35 inches.lbs, the closures of the invention may be between 28 and 42 inches.lbs (preferably, of course, closer to the mean).

The measurement of the stress loss in the creep test is intended to approximate the behavior of the compound to real filling conditions be achieved. For this purpose, a sample of the polymer compound is made (usually by injection molding), which has 20 mm in diameter and 6 mm high or thick.
For testing, the specimen is clamped in a universal testing machine. Such machines are z. B. under the name LR5kN Lloyd Instruments available.
The specimen is conditioned at 70 ° C in the heat chamber of the testing machine and compressed by 25% with a force of 1 mm / min. After setting the compression, the heating is interrupted and the door of the heating chamber is opened. The system is left to free cooling. A force transducer measures and records the compression-counteracting force.
6. Detaillierte Beschreibung der Erfindung6. Detailed description of the invention
Vascular occlusions according to the invention, as defined by their physical parameters (Shore A hardness, DVR, opening value, loss of tension), are basically suitable for all foods and drinks. Differences in the compositions of the respective sealing materials arise from the properties of the contents, in particular from whether they are fatty or fat-free products. For fat-free products, the required physical properties z. B. (partially) adjust over an oil content in the compound, which is higher than in known sealing materials for applications at higher temperatures. In the case of fatty products, it is preferable to dispense with relevant oil contents because oil from the compound could get into the product and / or fat components of the product into the sealing material.
In the following, first oily and subsequently oil-free sealing materials are treated.
6.1 Ölhaltige Dichtungsmaterialien6.1 Oil-based sealing materials
In preferred embodiments of the invention for use in low-fat products, and especially where the sealing material is to be sterilized, the compound composing the sealing material of the vessel closure is based on a TPS, preferably a SEBS in admixture with a "hard" polyolefin (with high Shore D hardness, above 65).
The necessary softness and improved sliding properties at low temperatures (opening value) are given to the compound by additions of a "softer" polyolefin (with lower Shore D hardness, below 60) and of oil.
In other preferred embodiments of the invention, especially where sterility is not important, the compound is based on a TPS, preferably SEBS, in admixture with other polyolefins, such as LDPE, LLDPE and other PE copolymers.
Sie liegt bei vergleichbaren Materialien oberhalb von 70.As TPS component is particularly SEBS, such as Kraton ® G-types with a linear structure with a polystyrene content of about 30-35%. The compound generally contains 20 to 50%, preferably 30-40% TPS. The preferred SEBS has a high molecular weight and high absorbency for oil. The Shore A hardness may not be determinable because the polymer in the pure state is not flowable enough to produce specimens. It is above 70 for comparable materials.
As a hard polyolefin, the compound preferably contains a propylene homopolymer having a Shore D hardness above 65, and preferably about 70, at levels between 5 and 30%, preferably between 8 and 15%.
As a softer polyolefin, the compound preferably contains LLDPE, with a Shore D hardness of about 50. Relevant levels of LDPE are preferably avoided. The content of softer polyolefin is generally between 10 and 30%, preferably between 8 and 20%.
Spannungsverlust: 59%In particularly preferred variants, the compound contains considerable amounts of oil, especially of medicinal white oil. The content of oil will be higher the lower the intended application temperatures of the vessel closure. Generally, the oil content is between 5 and 50%, more specifically between 30 and 50%. Embodiment 1
DVR at RT: 13%; at 4 ° C: 35%
Opening values at 4 ° C with 70 mm closures, 5 days: about 32 inches · lbs; 27 days: about 30 inches · lbs
Voltage loss: 59%
Sealing materials of this type are particularly suitable for general use in low-fat or fat-free foods at RT and also in the cold chain, down to 0 ° C. They are less suitable for very fatty foods because the high oil content can facilitate the migration of fatty components.
In preferred embodiments of the invention, which are also suitable for use with high-fat products, the compound of the sealing material is based on a TPS, in particular SEBS in admixture with an ethylene-octene copolymer, in particular a random copolymer.
For such applications particularly a SEBS type Kraton ® G with a polystyrene content of 11.5-13.5% and a Shore A hardness of about 35. Such SEBS are flowable and have a reduced capacity to absorb oil is suitable.
Other constituents used are preferably TPOs, ie polyolefin elastomers, in particular PP elastomers, and ethylene-octene block copolymers. If you take higher levels of SEBS in purchasing, the compound with harder polymers such. B. LDPE be equipped.
In all of these embodiments, the sealing material contains less than 5% oil and is preferably oil-free.
When using polyolefin elastomers, the content of lubricants (especially fatty acid amides) is generally higher.
The TPS component preferably consists of SEBS, especially of the type Kraton ® G. The content of TPS is generally between 5 and 70%, particularly between 10 and 30%.
The ethylene-octene copolymer is preferably a random copolymer of the type as Engage ®. The content is broadly between 10 and 80%, more particularly between 20 and 60% and preferably between 20 and 35%.
The polyolefin elastomer is preferably a PP elastomer, especially of the type Vistamaxx ®. The content of TPO is broadly 10 to 50%, more specifically 30 to 45%.
When the compound contains a TPO, in preferred variants a content of hard polyolefin, especially propylene homopolymer, is provided. The content of hard polyolefin is generally between 0 and 30%, more specifically between 15 and 25%.
In particular with variants without TPO content, the compound preferably contains substantial amounts of ethylene-octene block copolymer, for example of the type Infuse ®. The content is broadly between 10 and 80%, more specifically between 20 and 60% and preferably between 40 and 50%.
If higher TPS contents (above 25%) are used, a hard polyolefin, in particular LDPE, can be used instead.
Spannungsverlust: 55%In these variants, the content of lubricants may be low, and at 1% or less. Embodiment 2:
