Dabei ist für AS-Interface charakteristisch, dass im Netz Daten und Energie für die Busteilnehmer auf einem gemeinsamen, ungeschirmten 2-Leiter-Kabel transportiert werden. Die Daten werden in Form von analogen Impulsen auf dem Versorgungskabel übertragen. Um einen korrekten Datenaustausch sicherzustellen, wird das gesamte System hochsymmetrisch ausgebildet. Störungen von außen verschieben das Potential beider Leiter des Buskabels in gleicher Weise, so dass ihre Potentialdifferenz konstant bei dem von der Stromversorgung vorgegebenen Wert von etwa 30 V plus den Spannungsimpulsen, mit denen die Datenübertragung erfolgt, bleibt. Das ist das übliche Verfahren, um eine hohe Gleichtaktunterdrückung zu gewährleisten.
