Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf die an sich bekannte Behandlung des Tabakrauchs mit oxydierenden Mitteln zwecks Unschädlichmachung der Tabakgifte: Während jedoch bei diesen bekannten Verfahren der Rauch durch besondere, mit Schwermetallsalzen imprägnierte, vegetabilische Fasern enthaltende Hülsen geführt wird, welche in Cigarren- und Cigarettenspitzen oder in Pfeifenrohre eingeschoben werden, wird nach vorliegender Erfindung im Pfeifenkopf selbst eine Einlage angeordnet, die aus einem dem Pfeifenkopf entsprechend geformten Stück aus Retortenkohle, Koks, Graphit oder ähnlichen porösen Stoffen besteht, und welche in bekannter Weise mit sauerstoffübertragenden Metallverbindungen, ζ. Β. Platinmohr, imprägniert ist. Dies kann z. B. in der Weise geschehen, daß man den porösen Stoff mit Platinchlorid tränkt und ihn dann mittels einer reduzierenden Flamme ausglüht. An Stelle von Platinchlorid können auch andere Metallverbindungen, wie Kupfer-, Nickel-, Palladium-, Iridiumsalze, bei der Herstellung der Einlage verwendet werden.
