Abstract
Description
The invention is based on a method for detection a radar target according to the preamble of the claim 1.
The term "radar target" used in this patent application is a synonym (short version) for the expression "a means of a radar system detectable (detectable) target " "target" means an object that reflects radar waves animals and the at least one predefinable property be sits, for example a predeterminable minimum Radar backscatter cross section exceeds.
The invention is particularly applicable to detection from sea targets, for example ships that are surrounded of possible so-called (radar) clutter, the example as to ocean waves and / or environmental influences, such as Wol ken and / or precipitation.
It is particularly useful when detecting sea targets knows an area to be monitored in cells (measurement window) to subdivide with a definable area. Each cell contains a predeterminable number of so-called radar resolution cells len. It is obvious to start with at least one measurement ster, the only (possibly time-dependent) clutter contains, select and for this cell (in the video signal the radar system) a so-called clutter threshold (in Video signal), for example on a clutter means value formation based on the window. Now exceeds a predeterminable (amplitude the-) pulse this clutter threshold, this pulse becomes initially as a possible echo of a radar target (sea target) considered and then, if necessary, a further evaluation, for example a classification and / or identification on, fed.
It can be seen that in the detection of sea targets the Associated clutter threshold both time and location is dependent. Because the wave movement of the water can change over time, for example as a result of an emerging Storm. In addition, the wave motion and thus the Clutter, at least from the perspective of a radar system, be locally different, for example in the near and Far range assume different values. Such Be conditions disrupt and make detection more difficult of sea targets significantly.
The invention has for its object a generic ßes process to improve that in particular reliable detection when detecting sea targets a clutter threshold is enabled.
This problem is solved by the in the characterizing part of claim 1 specified features. Beneficial Refinements and / or further developments are the others Removable claims.
A first advantage of the invention is that the Er averaging of the clutter threshold in a wide range is independent of (radar) targets within the the (measuring) window that is used to determine the Clutter threshold was selected. It is advantageous not necessarily necessary in this (measurement) window existing target amplitudes (in the video area), which the (Ra targets) are assigned to hide, for example by reducing the (measuring) windows by one Enlargement of the number to be evaluated. That is, it is advantageously no knowledge of where (radar ) Targets lie within the (measurement) window, because only with such (complex) knowledge is a blanking out possible. The clutter threshold is determined partially still reliably possible if in a selected (measuring) window the proportion of the target lamplituden to evaluate a value of approximately 50% of all assumes the amplitudes.
A second advantage is that the process is almost is independent of the structure of the radar system, in particular of the target extractor used in this. This contains in generally a digital data processing system ge, which is preferably a programmable microprocessor contains. Now, for example, an existing radar system be retrofitted with the method according to the invention, so is advantageously only a change in the pro grams (software) of the data processing system required Lich. Advantageously, there are no assemblies (Hardware) can be changed.
Further advantages result from the following Be spelling.
The invention is based on the use of a be knew radar target extractor, which in the following also lake target extractor is called. Such a sea target extractor currently contains a digitally working one Data processing system. A sea target extractor has that Task, from a digitized video signal, which the received (radar) echo signals corresponds to those Select echo signals which targets to be detected, for example, ships. That means it must A distinction is made between echo signals from a (Sea) destination and those originating in particular from Clutter (swell) are caused.
The lake carried out in such a sea target extractor Target extraction essentially consists of one step show decrease in incoming data stream until last finally only those data are output that one Sea destination can be assigned. For data reduction Predeterminable threshold values are used with which under prescribable conditions a transfer of disruptive Data is prevented.
To suppress clutter, especially at sea (Wave movement of the sea) based, it is expedient ei to use an adapted clutter threshold, which cher is based on a clutter model in which the clut ter pulse heights using a (pulse height) frequency ver division can be described. Such a frequency distribution is determined by the parameters mean M and scatter S fully marked.
larmwahrscheinlichkeit Pfa verknüpft entsprechend der For
mel
In the sea target extraction, it is expedient to use a central threshold value, which is called the hit detection threshold TEK, i.e. all echo pulses (in the video signal) which exceed the hit detection threshold TEK are considered to belong to a sea target. The hit detection threshold TEK is linked to a false alarm probability P fa according to the formula
where f (x) denotes the continuous distribution density function of the present clutter distribution VT. If the sea state and thus the associated clutter distribution corresponds, for example, to a Gaussian distribution with the mean value M = µ and the standard deviation S = δ, it is possible to determine the hit detection threshold TEK from this Gaussian distribution according to the formula
TEK = µ + δ.K(Pfa) (2),
TEK = µ + δ.K (P fa ) (2),
where K means a constant. For example, with a presettable false alarm probability P fa = 10 -2, the value for the constant K results
K(Pfa=10-2)=2,32. K (P fa = 10 -2 ) = 2.32.
Die Ermittlung der Treffererkennungsschwelle TEK wird im folgenden erläutert:The determination of the hit detection threshold TEK is in the explains the following:
For example, if a sea area is at a predeterminable distance and with a definable area from a radar system This is a measurement window on a display screen representable. The measurement window itself contains pulse heights te (echo signals), the clutter and target amplitudes (in the video area).
mittelt. Daraus wird die Treffererkennungsschwelle TEK er
mittelt entsprechend der Formel:
If, in the ideal case, it is now assumed that only clutter amplitudes (originating only from clutter) are present in the measurement window, the mean (M) and the standard deviation S are averaged from the associated (clutter) pulse heights. From this, the hit detection threshold TEK is determined according to the formula:
TEK = Funktion (M, S, Pfa) (3).TEK = function (M, S, P fa ) (3).
Is the present distribution of the (clutter) pulse height Gauss-like, the formula (3) goes into the formula (2) about and it can mitit TEK in the manner described be communicated.
In the real case, however, faults occur, for example in follow an existing deformation of the clutter distribution, that is, it is not symmetrical about the Mit telwert M, and / or in the measurement window are unknown (Target) pulse height values (from targets to be detected touching) present.
In the method according to the invention, all impulses are now height values within a predeterminable measuring window lie, evaluated, that is, pulse height values, the clut ter correspond and such the targets to be detected Listen. All in a quantized (digitized) form available pulse height values within the measuring window the frequency of the pulse heights is now determined means it becomes the associated distribution density function VDF certainly. Predeterminable criteria that follow be explained in more detail, determined and from these the mean M and the standard deviation S. With these the hit detection threshold TEK is then corresponding Formula (3) determined.
Diese Kriterien beruhen beispielsweise auf empirischen Er
fahrungswerten, wobei beispielsweise
These criteria are based, for example, on empirical experience, for example
- - eine an sich bekannte Deformation ("Stutzung") der vor liegenden Impulshöhen-Verteilung aller Impulshöhenwerte innerhalb des aktuellen Meß-Fensters berücksichtigt wird;- a known deformation ("support") of the front lying pulse height distribution of all pulse height values taken into account within the current measurement window becomes;
- - die vorhandene Bit-Anzahl des Analog/Digital.-Wandlers, der zur Erzeugung der vorhandenen Impulshöhenwerte be nutzt wird, berücksichtigt wird; von der gewählten Bit-Anzahl ist es abhängig, ob die Impulshöhenwerte mit fei ner oder grober Abstufung ermittelt wurden.- the existing number of bits of the analog / digital converter, be to generate the existing pulse height values is used, is taken into account; of the selected number of bits it depends on whether the pulse height values with fei or coarse gradation were determined.
Based on the schematically represented figures, the Determination of the mean value M and the standard deviation S taking into account the example mentioned above ten criteria explained in more detail.
Die maximale Anzahl L der mögli chen Amplitudenwerte ist dabei abhängig von der Bit-Anzahl des verwendeten Analog/Digital-Wandlers entsprechend der Formel L = 2Bit-Anzahl - 1.In the following it is assumed that the echo signals received from a Ra daranlage from a predeterminable measurement window (clutter and / or target echoes) are mixed down in a manner known per se into the video area, so that an amplitude-modulated analog video signal is produced. This can then be filtered analogously if necessary, for example by means of a threshold circuit, in particular a CFAR circuit designed as a digital component, so that, for example, predefinable noise components are removed from the analog video signal. This low-noise analog video signal is now converted by means of an analog / digital converter into the associated digitized video signal. Here, the analog / digital converter generates an associated digital quantized amplitude value AMP from an analog amplitude value (abscissa in FIG. 1, FIG. 2). The maximum number L of possible amplitude values depends on the number of bits of the analog / digital converter used according to the formula L = 2 number of bits - 1.
In Fig. 1 is the frequency H i (ordinate), with i = 0, 1, 2, for a current specifiable measurement window and the quantized amplitude values AMP occurring therein, which can be due to clutter and targets to be detected. . ., L, the distribution density function VDF (solid line in Fig. 1) depending on the possible quanti sized amplitude values AMP (abscissa), which are determined by the number of bits of the analog / digital converter, on. From Fig. 1 it can be seen that existing targets, for example, have an amplitude value greater than 13, are not immediately recognizable, that is in the form of "peaks" in the frequency distribution, but are distributed over several re amplitude values, that is, for the targets there is a "smeared" representation in the amplitude distribution. Currently commercially available analogue / digital converters that can be used for these applications are inexpensively available for example with bit numbers of 4, 8, 16 or 32. In Fig. 1 it is assumed only for the sake of the drawing that a threshold value of zero is present in the above-mentioned threshold circuit and the quantized amplitude values belonging to clutter have a Gaussian distribution, the (amplitude) mean value M of which is at the quantized amplitude 7 lies. The quantized amplitude values belonging to the targets to be detected are at the quantized amplitude values greater than 13. There is obviously a very rough quantization for the amplitude values.
From Fig. 1 it can be seen that small amplitude values belong to clutter, but which, around the mean value M, we have significantly greater frequencies H i than the targets to be detected.
Bei dem Verfahren werden nun folgende Verfahrensschritte
durchgeführt:
The following process steps are now carried out in the process:
-
mit i = 0, 1, 2, . . .
For all of the echo signals (clutter and targets) present in the measurement window, the frequencies H i belonging to a respective quantized amplitude value are determined with the associated digitized amplitude values, so that a distribution density function arises. The frequencies H i are given, for example, in percentages, the sum of all frequencies H i within the measurement window being equal to 100%. Then the formula applies to the mean M, assuming a Gaussian-distributed clutter, of the quantized amplitude values
with i = 0, 1, 2,. . . L and L = 2 bits number -1. The formula applies to the standard deviation S, assuming a Gaussian-distributed clutter
This means that the mean M lies at that quantized amplitude value at which the distribution function (VF) of the quantized amplitude values assumes the value 0.5.
The amplitude value M + S is then that quantized amplitude value at which the distribution function (VF) of the quantized amplitude values assumes the value 0.841345.
The indicated 50% mark (for the mean M) and the 84% mark (for the standard deviation) only apply to a Gaussian distribution of the clutter. Is now, due to the choice of the signal processing of the clutter, but a different than the Gaussian distribution, the "50% mark" and the "84% mark" must be adapted to this distribution. This is theoretically possible for any distribution. -
S = iM+S - iM (6).2. For the application, formulas (4) and (5) result in the following instruction:
Starting from the smallest quantized amplitude value H 0 (i = 0), the frequencies H i of the existing distribution density function VDF are summed up until 50% of the quantized amplitude values present in the measurement window are recorded. At this point, the quantized amplitude value i M belonging to the mean M lies.
A further summation of the frequencies H i then takes place until 84.1345% of the quantized amplitude values present in the measurement window are recorded. The quantized amplitude value i M + S belonging to the value M + S then lies at this point.
The standard deviation S can then be determined from the formula
S = i M + S - i M (6). - 3. With the mean M determined in this way and then it the mean standard deviation S is then corresponding Formula (3) determines the hit detection threshold TEK.
Formulas (4) and (5) apply to a model in which one Gaussian distribution of the clutter is assumed. Is the Clutter, on the other hand, does not distribute Gauss, but obeys (corresponds) to another distribution, so are the formulas (2), (4) and (5) to adapt to this distribution.
The described method of determining the mean value M and the standard deviation S has the following enormous advantages over the MS estimation methods used otherwise:
The pulse height analysis described is not limited to a Gaussian-shaped clutter distribution, but applicable to almost any other, for example to a clutter distribution that has several almost equally high (relative) maxima of the quantized amplitude values. In such a case, it is then only necessary to adapt the criteria mentioned in accordance with formulas (4) and (5) to the existing distribution, for example by means of empirically determined weighting factors. If the distribution is not Gaussian, the determination of the hit detection threshold TEK must be modified by a different formula than the formula (2). This is represented in formula (3) with the term "function (M, S, P fa )" in general Darge.
The method enables a technically simple, accurate and quick determination of the mean M and the Stan dard deviation S, since only mathematically simple Re operations must be performed.
- c) Es gehen vorteilhafterweise keine Zielamplituden in die Schätzung des Mittelwertes M und der Standardabweichung S ein, da Zielamplituden groß sind, also größer M+S grö ßer M und da die Aufsummation der Häufigkeiten Hi bei dem kleinsten quantisierten Amplitudenwert (H0) beginnt.c) Advantageously, no target amplitudes are included in the estimate of the mean value M and the standard deviation S, since target amplitudes are large, that is to say M + S larger than M, and since the summation of the frequencies H i starts at the smallest quantized amplitude value (H 0 ) .
-
For a precise estimate of the mean M and the standard deviation S, it is advantageously not necessary that a complete distribution density function VDF is available for clutter, but it can also be a "truncated" distribution according to FIG. 2. Such occurs, for example, when the noise and / or CFAR thresholds mentioned at the beginning are set so high that clutter components are also suppressed with these thresholds.
For the described method, it is clearly only necessary that at least half of the distribution function is available. With such a "truncated" distribution density function VDF, a non-disturbing high frequency H 0 , for example H 0 = 30%, then belongs to the smallest quantized amplitude value. Based on this high frequency H 0 , the method then adds up until the values given in formulas (4) and (5) are reached. In extreme cases, the value i M = 0 is even permissible. It is advantageously not an additional conversion tion, for example by means of tables, especially with a "truncated" distribution density function the measured values for the mean M and the Stan dard deviation S in the corresponding correct theoreti converting values.
It can be seen that in the described method advantageously only the clutter distribution is almost always detected, because it is known, for example from empirical measurements, that the target pulse height values belonging to possible targets with a significantly lower frequency but with a significantly lower frequency higher quantized amplitude values than the clutter pulse height values occurring defects th, see FIG. 1 and FIG. 2.
Clutter amplitudes appear in the frequency distribution with small amplitude values. In contrast, target amplitudes occur in general with much larger amplitudes upgrade.
It is now possible in applications that more than about 8% of the amplitudes in a measurement window are to be evaluated as target amplitudes, for example in the case of the unfavorable combination: small measurement window and remote scanning, so that the real target amplitudes avoid the measurement falsify the values M and S. This is done in that in this case in formulas (4) and (5) the "100% mark" is not added up to the value L, that is to say by the summation
Diese Festsetzung beruht darauf, daß die Wahrscheinlichkeit, ins besondere im Falle einer "gestutzten" Verteilung, daß Clut teramplituden größer gleich L/2 auftreten, vernachlässigbar gering ist.is defined, but in that the "100% mark" by adding up to a value P, with P <L, for example P = L / 2. This The determination is based on the fact that the probability of ins especially in the case of a "trimmed" distribution that Clut teramplitudes greater than or equal to L / 2 occur, negligible is low.
It can be seen that the method is more advantageous So no determination is required at which locations there are targets within the measurement window and at what only places there is clutter. That is, it is not a division of the measurement window into smaller sub windows that are otherwise needed to set goals detect.
The invention is not based on the embodiment described examples limited, but analogously to other applications bar. So it is possible with the general radar procedure targets by so-called fixed and / or moving target clut ter are detected.
