Abstract

The device has bag (4) with its mouth attached to the base inside a housing (5) connected with a gas generator (1). The housing has a gas filling tube (2) which projects from the base towards the area into which the bag will inflate. The end of the tube has an outlet opening (3). The bag may be folded in a meandering manner, within the housing from the base attachment point (6), so that the filling tube is encircled by each layer of the folded bag, either parallel or at right angles to it. In this way when the system is activated the bag unfolds in manner which inflates and moves the bag incrementally out of the housing.

Description

The invention relates to an inflator for a Airbag unit, which is preferably in passive restraint systems to protect motor vehicle passengers from injury in the event of a collision as an impact protection device tion applies.

It is well known in front of a motor vehicle Vehicle driver or in front of a passenger inside the vehicle space to accommodate a folded gas bag cover, which filled with gas in a collision and in front of the vehicle occupants is inflated and this before an impact preserved on hard front interior parts and thereby protect him Protects injuries. It is customary to drive gas bag cover in a steering wheel pot and the front passenger side airbag cover in a container in the fittings deposit blackboard. The conventional systems have egg ne inflator with a gas generator as well an airbag and a housing, which inflate the direction and encloses the gas cushion. The gas bag is while in the container, in a predetermined folded configuration. All known safe Unit systems work in such a way that in the event of a collision, i.e. H. if deceleration forces act on the motor vehicle whose absolute values exceed a predetermined size step, a gas genes housed in a housing rator is ignited, pressurized gas is generated and as a result filled with gas at a relatively high pressure and inflated to a predetermined configuration and thus  is unfolded.

The common disadvantage of all known priorities technical solutions is that the gas bag as massive package ejected from the housing and unfolded and during the deployment of the airbag that in space common housing made of metal as well Gas bag even disadvantageously significant pressures, due to the required acceleration of a right relatively large compact mass, are exposed. this has again in a disadvantageous manner that during the unfolding process for deformation of the housing as the immediately surrounding components, such as. B. Arma door panel and holder for the airbag unit, as well as in rare cases of damage to the gas bag itself, especially in the area of the attachment approach on the Ge house that can come. The known airbag designs ha ben still has the disadvantage that they are in their axial Ent direction of folding, d. H. towards the vehicle occupant, can hardly be influenced or controlled.

The invention has for its object a Vorrich tion to create the disadvantages of the known techni solutions to the unfolding characteristics to improve the stik of the airbag of an airbag unit. This object is achieved by the in Pa measures or means described solves.

Es zeigenIn the following, the invention is to be illustrated using a drawing in of the several embodiments of the invention Solution are shown, are explained as an example. Show it

Fig. 1 to Fig. 3 each show a longitudinal section through the device according to the inven tion with various embodiments of the folding of the gas bag cover.

The device according to the invention shown in the drawing consists essentially of a gas source designed as a gas generator 1 for generating a propellant gas and an inflatable, in their Ruhela ge folded and enclosed by a housing 5 NEN gas bag cover 4th The device is also formed from that a tubular gas guide part 2 , through which the gas flow is led to the filling space of the gas bag cover 4 , is provided with a gas outlet opening 3 at its end and the gas guide part 2 in turn with the gas generator 1 and the Housing 5 is functionally connected and through the mouth opening of the gas bag attached to the bottom of the housing 5 protrudes 4 into its filling space. In its rest position, the gas bag cover 4 is folded in the housing 5 so that the gas guide part 2 is fully enclosed by the individual layers of the folded gas bag cover 4 .

Here, it is useful to form the individual layers of the gas bag cover 4 folded in a meandering manner in the housing 5 such that they either in the transverse direction, as shown in FIG. 1, or lengthways, as shown in FIGS . 2 and 3, to the gas guide part 2 run. As can be seen from FIGS. 2 and 3, two advantageous embodiments are possible when folding in the longitudinal direction, one side of the folding being carried out in such a way that starting from the fastening projection 6 of the gas bag cover 4 at the bottom of the housing 5, the folding on the housing wall begins continues in the direction of the gas guide part 2 ( FIG. 3) and on the other hand, the folding on the gas guide part 2 continues beginning in the direction of the housing wall ( FIG. 2).

When activating the gas generator 1 , the filling space of the gas bag cover 4 is filled with the fluid via the gas guide part 2 in a very short time interval and thereby the gas bag cover 4 is unfolded from the housing 5 into a predetermined configuration and simultaneously over the gas guide part 2 .

Die mit der Erfindung erzielten Vorteile bestehen insbe sondere darin, daßThe advantages achieved with the invention are in particular special in that

The gas bag not in its entirety from the Ge is pushed out, but gradually ent is folded
The direction of deployment of the airbag itself of the gas guide part and the possible tax can influence the gas flow better,
  • - geringere Kräfte zur Entfaltung notwendig sind, da nicht die gesamte Masse des Gassackes auf einmal be schleunigt werden muß.- Lower forces are required to develop, because not the entire mass of the gas bag at once must be accelerated.
