The copolymers of ethylene and unsaturated carbolic acids which are suitable for the adhesive according to the invention are known. A method of making them is described in US Pat. No. 3,132,120. The ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid component of this copolymer can consist of a monocarboxylic or dicarboxylic acid which has 3 to 8 carbon atoms. Such carboxylic acids are, for example, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, ethacrylic acid, fumaric acid, maleic acid, itaeonic acid, crotonic acid and the like The acid content of an advantageous copolymer can be between about 0.1 and 75 percent by weight of the copolymer. The acid range of the commercially available copolymers with acrylic acid is between about 0.1 and 40 percent by weight of the copolymer .. The preferred acid range of the latter is between about 2 and 20 percent by weight, since the products have increased crystallinity above about 20 0 Jo. Among the commercially available copolymers of ethylene and ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids classified above are ZETAFIN QX 3623.7, QX 3623.22, and QC 3623.24, sold by Dow Chemical Company. These resins have about the same acrylic acid content, namely about 6.8%. However, the melt indices vary and are about 5.20 and 40. Other useful copolymers are EA 9000, EA 9300 and EA 9320, which are sold by Union Carbide Corporation. These resins vary in both acrylic acid content and melt index. The corresponding. Acid levels are around 14 %, 20% and 16 %. The corresponding melt indices are about 5.50 and 5. Another suitable copolymer is EMAZZ, which is sold by the Monsanto Company. This resin is an ethylene-maleic acid copolymer with an acid content of about 70%.

The adhesive mixtures according to the invention can be made cheaper or improved in their properties by adding commercially available fillers in appropriate amounts. Such fillers are for example zirconitirasilicate, aluminum silicate, iron oxide, Lime and aluminum powder.
It has been found that advantageous adhesive mixtures are formed when nically unsaturated carboxylic acid is used between about 0.1 and 75 weight percent coal tar and from about 99> 9 and 25 weight percent of a copolymer of ethylene and a äthyie- W. A preferred adhesive mixture contains between about 20 and 50 0 Jo pitch and between about 50 and 80% resin. Fillers can be added in an amount between 0 and about 50 percent by weight of the adhesive base mix and preferably between 0 and about 20 % .
It was found that the above Mixtures after grinding in a rubber mill or in an extrusion device. Adhesives with excellent properties Deliver over a wide temperature range in comparison to the known adhesives. The tensile shear strength, . are the peel strength and the tensile strength excellent and also the resistance to Moisture and bacterial attack. The adhesives according to the invention can easily be applied to substrate surfaces, even if these have hardly been cleaned or not cleaned at all.
As the pitch content increases, the adhesive mixtures become harder and more resistant to heat, but the overall properties are somewhat poorer, so that a ratio of pitch to mixed polymer of 75:25 leads to adhesive mixtures which do not give satisfactory results for some purposes. The overall properties of the adhesive mixtures will generally be somewhat better if a pitch is used which has an calibration point which is in the upper range of the pitch softening point range. However, the application temperature is advantageously lower when using a pitch which has a lower softening point. The application or application temperature is the optimum setting temperature at which a test sample shows maximum tensile strength. The overall properties of the adhesive mixtures according to the invention also vary, somewhat with the copolymer used and with the type of mixing.
In the following examples, the production of the adhesives according to the invention is explained in detail and their properties specified the adhesives according to the invention. In Example 1, ZETAFIIi QX 3623.7 was used alone in the nipple of a rubber mill which had two horizontal rollers that rotated against each other and had a narrow slot between them. The rollers were preheated to a temperature of about 143 C and the copolymer was slowly applied to the rotating rollers. After the mixed polymer pellets melted, the roller was operated for an additional 20 minutes. After removal, the product was pressed into foils. In Examples 2-6, pellets of the same copolymer were melted, coal tar pitch added, and the mixture mixed for 20 minutes. Films were then pressed. In Examples 2-4 the ratios were varied for a coal tar pitch which had a ring and ball softening point of about 150.degree. In Examples 5 and 6 the conditions were varied for a coal tar pitch having a ring and ball softening point of about IiO 0 C. In comparing examples 1 and 2 could be established that the shear and peel strengths for the copolymer-pitch mixture were significantly better than for the copolymer alone. When comparing the results for Examples 2-6, a poorer result at one temperature is usually accompanied by a better result for another temperature. When comparing Examples 4 and 6, which represent adhesive mixtures in a ratio of 50:50 with different pitches, the tensile shear strengths are comparable. The peel strengths at the pitch having a melting point of 110 ° C is somewhat lower than the pitch having a melting point of 150 C. The corresponding Anwendungsteraperaturen lie at 121 0 C and 177 ° C. Therefore, a maximum strength at a lower temperature with a pitch having a melting point of 0 C IiO developed. The results are summarized in Table I. Some of the test results at -55 ° C are indicated with an asterisk in Tables I and II. A true vert could not be obtained here because the tensile strength of the steel substrates was exceeded before the adhesive bond broke.

Diese Ergebnisse lagen etwas niedriger als die vergleichbaren Ergebnisse für Beispiel 2.Example 2 was repeated as Example 13 to illustrate the effect of a typical commercially available filler on the adhesive mixture of the invention. Zircon, a commercially available zirconium silicate, was used which had a grain size that would pass through a sieve with a sieve opening of 0.074 (-200 mesh). The mixture contained 33 l / 3 percent by weight of a pitch (150 ° C.), 33 l / 3 percent by weight of ZETAFIN QX 3623.7 and 33.1 / 3 percent by weight of zirconium. The measured at 22.8 0 C tensile shear strength was 84.4 kg / cm and measured at 180 ° peel strength was 15.9 kg per 2.54 cm. These results were slightly lower than the comparable results for Example 2.

A mixture according to Example 3 was used (37% - 150 C pitch and 63% -ZETAFIN QX 3623.7) to represent that relatively good tensile shear strengths can be obtained at 22.8 0 C without regard to the treatment of the substrate surface from a cold rolled carbon steel or galvanized steel. The results are summarized in Table 3.
