The various processes that have become known so far, substitutes for wood, To produce horn and the like from cellulose using viscose as a starting material, have only given incomplete results because it is difficult to find one in terms of quality and mixture homogeneous in structure due to the non-uniformity of the fixation of the To preserve cellulose. Rather, the products obtained have holes in the mass, uneven density and unequal resistance, as a result they lack plasticity and Regularity.
It has now been found that an easily malleable plastic material is obtained can, which does not show any of the disadvantages described, can be rotated smoothly and a beautiful polish, also of perfect homogeneity in terms of mass and structure is if one assumes undissolved cellulose xanthogenate instead of viscose. to For this purpose, xanthate, which in a known manner from alkali cellulose with Carbon disulfide is preserved, left to its own devices for 1 to 2 days at normal temperature, whereby it goes through a process of maturation. The granular mass in this state is now for a certain time, about 1 hour, in the cold with a squeeze or Rolling mill treated and then again left to its own devices for about 24 hours.
■ L .By this process, the cellulose xanthate is obtained in the form of a paste of uniform consistency. This soft paste is then allowed to pass through an extruder in order to remove the bubbles which are still enclosed in the mass and thus to achieve an absolutely homogeneous and compact mass. Finally, the product, which still consists of xanthate, is brought directly from the press into tubes or templates, in which it is dried in the heat at about 30 ° for 24 to 36 hours, the xanthate decomposing and pure cellulose being reformed. The decomposition of cellulose xanthogenate into cellulose by heating is known in and of itself. However, it is essential that this regression of cellulose takes place in closed vessels, since if this process were carried out openly the mass left to itself would expand and thereby lose its uniformity. On the other hand, the walls of the tubes or molds exert a pressure on them during the regeneration of cellulose due to the heat and thus prevent any expansion or change in shape. ■ L.
