Das Anlassen von Wechselstrom -Gleichstrom -Einanker-Synchronmaschinen geschah bisher entweder dadurch, daß man die Maschine von der Kollektorseite her mit Gleichstrom auf den synchronen Gang brachte und dann den Wechselstrom auf die Schleifringseite schaltete, oder man benutzte die Kollektorseite mit der Magnetwicklung in Serie, um mittels Wechselstrom die Maschine auf synchronen Gang zu bringen. Bei Erreichung des Synchronismus schaltet man den Wechselstrom auf die Schleifringe des Ankers; die Maschine läuft nun als synchroner Wechselstrommotor weiter, und es läßt sich auf der Kollektorseite Gleichstrom entnehmen. Es fallen also alle komplizierenden Umschaltvorrichtungen der Magnete vollkommen weg und der rotierende Anker erzeugt sich unter allen Umständen, sobald er den Synchronismus erreicht hat, seine erforderliche Gleichstromerregung selbst, was als Hauptvorteil des Umformers zu betrachten ist.
