Patentirt im Deutschen Reiche vom 17. März 1881 ab.Patented in the German Empire on March 17, 1881.
My invention relates to a new metal alloy and a method of application same bezw on steel, iron or other metals. Metal alloys, which then afterwards coated with silver or other metal or left without such a coating at will can be. It is the result of attempts to discover a non-oxidizable alloy, which I have found that certain metals do not form complete alloys, except in special ones Circumstances and under certain circumstances as described below. So have I observed that if tin was used in a suitable manner with lead and silver after the further is combined with the relationships given below, an alloy arises which is not alone firmly adheres to iron and steel, but rather these metals, when appropriately prepared are impregnated, as it were. The proportions of the metals forming the alloy can be changed vary somewhat according to the intended purposes; I prefer the in the the following tables to use:
I. Tabelle.I. table.

Zinn 90 Gewichtstheile,Tin 90 parts by weight,

Sa. 100 Gewichtstheile.Sa. 100 parts by weight.
The latter table is preferred when the alloy is used for iron or steel should be used.
The tin is first melted, and when a shiny white color is on the surface of it When complete melting is indicated, the lead is added in a granular state and stirred, for example with a stick of very dry material Pine wood, slowly around. Then the separately melted silver is introduced and in combined with the mixture in the same way. At this point the fire must be under The crucible will be strengthened quickly until the surface of the metal is a light, yellowish color Color assumes, whereupon stirred very quickly, and the alloy for the purpose of formation of ingots being poured into molds.
Anstatt der Säurelösung kann man auch Scheidewasser anwenden,One has to manufacture articles which are treated with the alloy in question If you want to choose between iron and steel, take steel, in your own purest qualities. The invention finds a very advantageous use for table knives; the blade of such a knife z. B. is first in a solution of 100 parts by weight distilled water or filtered rainwater and 1 to 10 parts by weight Immersed in hydrochloric or sulfuric acid and, depending on its thickness, for a longer or shorter time serene so that it may have been attacked by the same, which the latter can recognize by it allows spots to appear on the surface of the metal. Instead of the acid solution you can also use septic fluid,
welches nur ein Eintauchen von sehr kurzer Dauer erfordert.which only requires immersion for a very short time.
If the blade is pulled out of the bathroom, they must, directly in pure water bathed and washed quickly and completely, after which they so 1 * means soon as possible a piece of old linnens, soft leather or a very dry sponge wiping and drying. When this is done, it is exposed to dry heat for about five minutes in an oven heated to 70 or 80 ° C., after which it is pulled out and again wiped off.
The above operations have the purpose of using the blade for impregnation of the alloy, and cause the iron or steel from which it is made is perforated with a multitude of almost infinitely small holes. With iron, unless it is of excellent quality, the size of these perforations is extreme different; Defective parts also occasionally appear in the same, which require further treatment very difficult. In the case of steel, on the other hand, the difference in the size of the holes is almost imperceptible, so that the following operations can be carried out without difficulty are. This is the main reason why I prefer steel.
Once the perforations have been made, the knife blade is placed in a metal bath, which is composed according to one of the tables listed above. To be the end the ingots melted over a moderate fire in a crucible made of graphite or refractory clay, but not in an iron container, because particles of the iron mix with the alloy, and the alloy becomes free Make air oxidizable, that is, would perish.
Before being introduced into the alloy, the iron or steel must be brought to a temperature preheated from 50 to 60 ° C; the bath must be completely liquid and with a dry stick made of pine or poplar wood. It is also necessary that the surface of the molten metal has a fine silver-white color, such as that obtained if you let the melting go slowly and only stir afterwards the whole mass has melted.
If these precautionary rules are observed, the impregnation of the object goes quickly and the alloy penetrates the artificially created holes and pores of the metal, which are somewhat expanded by the preheating. The duration of the immersion The alloy is very short for a knife blade and similar thin articles, and is only a few seconds. For objects of greater strength, such as B. for horse bits, stable chains and the like is a period of 2 to 5 minutes is required.
After the metal bath, the iron or iron object to be treated is inserted Steel immediately in cold water or hardens respectively. temper it or set the earlier one The degree of hardness of the same can be restored in any other known manner as required. Has one should take care that the cold water does not act too long on the metal, because the latter could otherwise become brittle. This is followed by wiping and drying again, however without heating, and now the object is polished. It then has the whiteness and luster of silver, as well as its sound, and is not oxidizable under ordinary atmospheric influences.
Zur Bildung des hierzu verwendeten Amalgams nehme ich:However, if it is a question of the objects coated in this way also against the effect from common acids such as vinegar, citric or other fruit acids, or canned To protect things, so that they, if they are with such or fish and Fatty substances and other kitchen products or beverages come into contact with the same give no aftertaste, nor take on a smell or taste themselves, so, after the alloy coating has been produced, they are still covered with an amalgam rubbed. To form the amalgam used for this purpose, I use:
Quecksilber
Zinn ....
Silber . . .mercury
Tin ....
Silver . . .
60 Gewichtstheile,
3960 parts by weight,
39
Sa. 100 Gewichtstheile.Sa. 100 parts by weight.
Of these metals, the tin is first melted, and when it has become well fluid, so the silver in a powdered state is poured on its surface and melts pretty quickly. This is followed by stirring with a very dry pine stick and now, with continued stirring, the mercury was gradually added, whereupon one let the mixture cool in an earthenware vessel. When this is done, the mass becomes Heated again over a moderate fire without stirring, by three or four repeated times. The amalgam is then ready and must be placed in a closed container stored and protected from exposure to light.
Dieses Zeug darf nur in durchaus trockenem Zustand,If the polished articles are now to be amalgamated, they are rubbed lightly with it Amalgam obtained in the above .Process. A soft cotton cloth is used as an aid Stuff or the like, which was previously treated with a solution of 1 part by weight nitric acid potassium (saltpeter) and 100 parts by weight is impregnated with filtered water. This stuff may only be in a completely dry condition,
und nachdem es durch Reiben zwischen den Händen geschmeidig gemacht worden, benutzt werden; ist es einmal von dem Amalgam durchdrungen, so bleibt es für sehr lange Zeit verwendbar. and after having softened it by rubbing it between the hands, used it will; once it has been penetrated by the amalgam, it can be used for a very long time.
The above operations, listed one after the other, have the compound of iron or Stahls first with the metals of the alloy and then with those of the amalgam Effect. The following processes complete and perfect the series -of compounds, making the articles treated according to the present invention keep the various metals so intimately and inseparably connected as in one real alloy.
After amalgamation, galvanic precipitation takes place, or otherwise, a coating of silver is produced, which is produced through the mediation of the amalgam with the mass of the article itself being treated, as well as that which has penetrated into it Alloy combines or mixes, and in this the invention differs from those heretofore known Processes from which only a simple layering of the silver or the like on the surface of the coated metal.
If the last coating is to consist of gold, it is advisable to galvanize this metal To cast down ways on the surface of the silver.
In cases where it is desirable, the method described at a lower cost To realize this, I use an alloy without silver, about 90 parts by weight of tin and 10 parts by weight of lead, and immerse in it the iron or steel according to the one indicated Way on which the amalgam and silver coating are made. This modification but does not give so satisfactory results as if the alloy of silver, Lead and tin according to the proportions indicated.
Not only for iron and steel, but also for bronze, nickel silver and other metals, as well Alloys that can withstand the heat required for various operations, the invention is applicable. This only increases the hardness and sound of these materials. Likewise, the application of the method is not limited to the treatment of cutlery and the same. Also other kitchen utensils, which must not be oxidized, and a large number of objects of art and commercial articles are advantageously coated in the manner described.
