Description
In addition to natural products such as starch, cellulose or protein, Increasingly synthetic products, primarily water-soluble acrylic resins, are used. Acrylic resin sizes are particularly important in the field of chemical threads Obtained, since these fiber materials have high demands on special properties and thus on a very uniform Quality of the finish. These requirements can be met with synthetic coatings more easily than with those made from natural products.
Synthetic fibers usually have a much smoother surface than natural fibers and are compared with these, hydrophobic. This increases the adhesion between the size film and the fiber difficult, so that the size easily flakes off the fiber. The adhesion can be made more hydrophobic Adjustment of the size can be improved, but at the same time the size film becomes less water-soluble and is difficult to wash off the fiber after weaving.
Poor adhesion between the size and the fiber occurs especially with the synthetic threads made of polyamide, Polyester and polyacrylonitrile, in some cases also in cellulose acetate and regenerated cellulose threads.
Sizes made of polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acid or their salts have long been in use for the fibers mentioned. More hydrophobic settings are obtained when acrylic and methacrylic acid salts are copolymerized with esters of these acids or other water-insoluble monomers. US Pat. No. 2,244,703 describes textile sizes made from aqueous solutions of copolymers which, in addition to units of alkali metal salts of methacrylic acid, contain 2 to 70% methacrylic acid ester units. Copolymers of 5 to 20 ° / 0 of acrylic and / or methacrylic acid and 80 to 95% acrylic and methacrylic esters, wherein at least half of these esters to be higher Acrylester or methacrylic ester, according to the USA. Patent 2,807,865 in the form of their Alkali salts used as textile sizes. US Pat. No. 2,945,013 discloses sizes obtainable by copolymerization of 93.5 to 98.5% acrylic acid and 1.5 to 6.5% 2-ethylhexyl acrylate or methacrylate.
Excellent sizes, especially for cellulose acetate fibers, are z. B. obtained by the process of US Pat. No. 2,727,835, that about 90% of the polymethyl acrylate is saponified under alkaline conditions. The copolymers obtained in this way of about 90% alkali acrylate and 10% methyl acrylate give films that adhere well to those that are difficult to size Fibers that are easily soluble in water and not yet sticky at 65 to 70% relative humidity. The multi-step manufacturing process that involves the creation of a polymethyl acrylate of suitable viscosity and its saponification with aqueous alkali is, however, unsatisfactory in technical terms. Attempts have been made to obtain equivalent sizing agents by copolymerizing acrylic acid and to make methyl acrylate and neutralization in one step, however, were the products unusable despite the same composition, since the size film is at 50% relative humidity was still too brittle, but was already sticky at 65% relative humidity. Also through variation Due to the mixing ratio and the acrylic esters used, only such products could be obtained that are either too hygroscopic, i. H. Sticky in high humidity, or too slow were water soluble.
Das unterschiedliche Verhalten von einerseits durch Hydrolyse, andererseits durch Mischpolymerisation hergestellten Produkten gleicher Bruttozusammensetzung dürfte auf einer unterschiedlichen Verteilung der Monomereinheiten in der PolymerisatketteThe different behavior of on the one hand through hydrolysis, on the other hand through copolymerization Produced products of the same gross composition are likely to be based on a different distribution of the monomer units in the polymer chain

Textile sizes have now been found which make the above-mentioned saponification of polymethyl acrylate The coatings obtained are superior in their performance properties and are much more advanced allow extensive adaptation to the respective technical requirements. The new finishes are easily soluble in water, adhere excellently to fibers that are otherwise difficult to size, become at high Humidity not sticky and are easy to wash off with water. You are beyond that simple way, namely directly by copolymerization, can be produced.
