The invention relates to a process for the recovery of a hydroformylation catalyst, in particular of a hydroformylation catalyst complex containing cobalt, carbon monoxide and a tertiary Contains phosphine, from one in the production of primary alcohols by converting olefins with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of this catalyst waste stream from the circulated catalyst solution.
In the usual continuous operation of this process, with soluble If cobalt carbonyl phosphine catalysts are used, the hydroformylation catalyst complex is used recovered from the desired end products and returned to the Procedure returned. This stream also contains the higher boiling oxidized impurities. There As the concentration of these impurities increases over time, some of that is returned to the system Discarded catalyst solution in order to reduce the concentration of said impurities decrease or at least to a constant CO CO CO
in polaren organischen Lösungsmitteln, insbesondere in neutralen, sauerstoffhaltigen Verbindungen.
sind Trialkylphosphine, bei denen jede AlkylgruppeIt has the empirical formula [Co (CO) 3 PA] 2 , where A stands for hydrocarbon radicals. Although this complex does not have a polar character, it is highly soluble in polar organic solvents, especially in neutral, oxygen-containing compounds. This fact makes it possible to circulate the catalyst as a solution, expediently some of the polar end products of the hydroformylation process, in particular alcohols, aldehydes and the higher-boiling oxygen-containing by-products, being used as polar solvents.
The hydrocarbyl tertiary phosphine moiety of the above catalyst can be a tertiary phosphine such as a trialkyl phosphine, a trialkaryl phosphine, a triaryl phosphine, a triaralkyl phosphine, or an equivalent mixed phosphine. The hydrocarbon groups, denoted as a whole by A in the above formula, do not necessarily have to be identical to one another. Suitable tertiary organophosphine ligands are also the mixed phosphines in which two or more of the three substituents which saturate the phosphorus valences can be different alkyl (including cycloalkyl), aryl, aralkyl or alkyl radicals. A particularly preferred group of phosphines are trialkylphosphines, in which each alkyl group
Contains 1 to 20, preferably 4 to 15, carbon atoms in the molecule, these being straight-chain, branched ones or cycloalkyl radicals can act. Typical examples of such hydrocarbon phosphines are Trimethylphosphine, triethylphosphine, tri-n-butylphosphine, Trihexylphosphine, Tridecylphosphine, Din-Butyl-cctadecylphosphine, Tri-n-dodecylphosphine, triphenylphosphine, tris- (dimethylphenyl) -phosphine, Tricyclohexylphosphine, di-phenyl-butylphosphine, etc. The series from tri-n-butylphosphine to tri-n-dodecylphosphine is particularly preferred.
.-Suitable tertiary phosphines also include that group of tertiary phosphines in which a divalent hydrocarbon residue saturates two of the valences of the phosphorus atom and thereby a heterocyclic one Forms compound with a trivalent phosphorus atom. For example, a two-valued Hydrocarbon residue 2 saturate phosphorus valences with its two free valences and thereby a » form cyclic compound. The third phosphorus valence can be replaced by any other carbon • W> be saturated with hydrogen residue. Preferred tertiary phosphines of this type are those in which the Hydrocarbon radical is a divalent 1,4-hydrocarbon or 1,5-hydrocarbon radical and those described in German patent application S 1 00 940 tertiary heterocyclic 5-ring phosphines or the tertiary heterocyclic 6-ring phosphines forms, which are described in German patent application S 10 826 IVb / 12 ο. .-
In the process according to the invention, a nonionic cobalt carbonyl-hydrocarbon-tertiary phosphine complex which is dissolved in a polar solvent is converted into an ionic carbonylphosphine complex which has a lower solubility in the polar solvent, as a result of which it can be separated from the solvent. If the nonionic cobalt carbonylphosphine complex [Co (CO) 3 PA] 2 is exposed to a carbon monoxide atmosphere under increased pressure, it can be converted into an ionic complex with the formula [(AP) 2 Co (CO) 3 I + [Co (CO) 4 ] - be converted. This ionic complex is less soluble in neutral polar organic solvents and can be precipitated from them, whereby it can be separated from the solvent by conventional methods such as filtration, centrifugation or decantation.
According to a preferred embodiment of the continuously operated hydroformylation and Aldolization process, a high pH is maintained in the reaction zone; H. in alkaline Medium worked. As a result, the discharge stream containing the dissolved catalyst also has a high pH, usually around 11. For converting the nonionic catalyst in the ionic, separable compound, the pH is lowered according to the invention.
The optimum conditions for the above-described conversion will generally depend on the particular composition of the catalyst-containing vent stream and may vary somewhat depending on the catalyst composition itself. The treatment temperature used is preferably about 80 to 100 ° C. A CO partial pressure which is 4.15 atmospheres higher than the CO partial pressure during the preceding hydroformylation reaction should preferably be maintained. If desired, higher pressures can of course also be used. The reaction time in the conversion stage can be varied within a wide range. A good degree of effectiveness can be achieved with treatment times as short as one hour as well as with treatment times as long as 20 hours.
The pH can be adjusted in a simple manner by adding saturated carboxylic acids which are soluble in the discharge stream to the discharge stream. Examples of suitable acids are formic acid, acetic acid and higher alkanoic acids etc. By this measure, the pH is not reduced to a value of 8 or less and preferably set to a range between 3.0 and 8.0. Sometimes, for example if lower aliphatic acids are used, their alkali salts together with the ionic, separable ones Precipitate cobalt complex. However, you can easily get them off by washing with water Can be separated mixture.
In some cases it is advantageous if other polar solvents, such as. B. methanol, Dimet'iylsulfoxyd, dimethylformamide, nitrobenzene, etc., can be added, since this can promote a more extensive conversion of the nonionic complex into the desired ionic complex salt. If it is sufficiently volatile, the added solvent can then be distilled off again from the mixture, the solubility of the ionic complex salt being reduced at the same time and the solvent being recovered for reuse.
The recovered ionic salt can be slurried in a solvent such as butanol and used for Stripping off carbon monoxide are heated, with the original nonionic complex again which can be reused as a catalyst in the hydroformylation reaction zone.
Optionally, the ionic salt, which is not soluble in the discharge stream, can be in a more polar solvent are dissolved and fed back into the reaction zone in a circuit, the original nonionic complex catalyst "in situ" forms from it again.
The process of the invention for the recovery of valuable catalyst offers the further The advantage is that there is no oxidation or destruction of the very sensitive phosphine components of the catalyst complex entry. Another advantage of the recovery process according to the invention is that phosphine oxides and other phosphine decomposition products normally contained in the catalyst Discharge stream are contained, and remain in solution during the recovery process cannot be recycled to the reaction zone, which may be the case after other catalyst recovery processes is being worked on.
The process according to the invention is of particular advantage for the recovery of catalysts which are used in the hydroformylation of lower olefins, a mixture of alcohols being obtained which contains an alcohol with n + 1 carbon atoms and an alcohol with 2 (w + 1) C. Contains atoms, where η is the number of carbon atoms in the olefin. In particular, the recovery process according to the invention can advantageously be used in the preparation of a mixture of n-butanol and 2-ethylhexanol.
Unless otherwise stated, the weight: volume ratio means the ratio of grams: milliliters.
Der gelbe Niederschlag wurde mittels Infrarotspektroskopie als ionisches Komplexsalz mit der FormelTo convert propylene to n-butanol and 2-ethylhexanol, 3 feedstock streams were fed into a large number of continuously operating reactors. The first input material stream contained synthesis gas, ie a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide in a molar ratio of 2: 1. The second feed stream contained propylene and the third catalyst feed. The catalyst starting material contained cobalt octoate and tributylphosphine dissolved in n-butanol and water. Catalyst starting material was fed to the reactors in such an amount that the total amount of the starting materials contained 0.5% by weight of cobalt. Most of the catalyst starting material ingredients were converted into complex dicobalt hexacarbonyl-bis-tributylphosphine under the prevailing reaction conditions in the reactors. In addition, an aqueous potassium hydroxide solution was fed into the reactors in such an amount that 2 molecules of KOH were present per cobalt atom. Carbon monoxide, hydrogen and propylene reacted pressure at about 34.1 atmospheres and 160 to 180 0 C to n-butanol and 2-ethylhexanol. From the reactors of the first product stream flowed to a stripper where hydrogen, carbon monoxide r and propylene were blown off. From there they were fed to a compressor, from which they were fed back to the reactors in the circuit. The alkanol products, ie n-butanol and 2-ethylhexanol, were drawn off overhead from the stripping column and fed to separation and purification systems. A solution of nonionic dicobalt-hexa-carbonylbis-tributyl-phosphine complex, dissolved in a mixture of predominantly n-butanol and other end products of the process, as well as higher-boiling, oxygen-containing by-product impurities, was withdrawn as the bottom product from the stripping column. This stream was fed to the reactors as a circulating catalyst solution stream. A portion of this main circuit catalyst stream was vented to avoid the build-up of high-boiling oxygen-containing impurities. From this vent stream of the circulating catalyst solution stream, the catalyst was recovered as follows: 172.3 parts by weight of the vent stream which contained about 46 weight percent Q aldehydes and alcohols, 40 weight percent C aldehydes and alcohols, and 14 weight percent oxygenated compounds having more than 8 carbon atoms withdrawn and fed to an autoclave with 2000 volume units. By analyzing the discharge stream, it was found to contain 1.1 parts by weight of cobalt and 4.6 parts by weight of tributylphosphine derived from the catalyst in solution. In order to reduce the pH to at least 8.0, 5.3 parts by weight of octanoic acid were added to the contents of the autoclave. While the red solution was stirred at 1500 to 1800 rpm, carbon monoxide was introduced to a pressure of 48.3 atmospheres pressed and the autoclave was heated to 100 0 C. After this temperature had been reached, the pressure was increased to 68.2 atmospheres by injecting more carbon monoxide. The temperature of 100 ° C. was maintained for 85 minutes. The autoclave was then rapidly cooled at a rate of about 5 ° C / min to 25 0 C subsequently. A yellow precipitate had formed and was filtered off using a sintered metal filter with an average pore size of 5 microns. The yellow precipitate was identified by infrared spectroscopy as an ionic complex salt with the formula
[Co(CO)3(P(C4H9)3)2]+[Co(CO)4][Co (CO) 3 (P (C 4 H 9 ) 3 ) 2 ] + [Co (CO) 4 ]
identifiziert. Its infrared spectrum showed a strong carbonyl band at 1890 cm "1 , which is characteristic of the cobalt tetracarbonyl anion, and strong carbonyl bands at 1892 and 1997 cm" 1 , which are characteristic of cobalt carbonyltributylphosphine. 69% of the cobalt originally present in the discharge stream became the ionic salt A further amount of the ionic salt can be obtained from the filtrate of the yellow precipitate by re-treatment in the manner described above, whereby the total amount of cobalt recovered increased to 74% of the cobalt originally present in the discharge stream converted into the originally present nonionic complex and reused in the hydroformylation reaction.
The recovery process according to the example! was repeated, but one was arranged in series Metal filter with an average pore size of 10 microns to filter out the yellow Precipitation used. The filtration was as shown in the table at different temperatures carried out to show that the recovery of the ionic salt without complete prior cooling can be carried out.
There were 173.3 parts by weight of the discharge stream placed in a 2000 volume autoclave. To adjust the pH To reduce, 4.5 parts by weight of octanoic acid were fed into the autoclave. The synthesis gas that Containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide in a molar ratio of 2: 1, was up to a pressure of 136.4 atmospheres. By otherwise proceeding as in Example 1, a total of 40% of the cobalt originally present in the discharge stream is recovered.
312,1 Gewichtsteile eines Katalysatorlösungsablaßstroms, der gemäß Beispiel 1 erhalten wurde und etwa312.1 parts by weight of a catalyst solution drain stream, which was obtained according to Example 1 and about
Containing 7 percent by weight of C 4 aldehydes and alcohols as well as 18 percent by weight of C 8 aldehydes and alcohols and 75 percent by weight of oxygen-containing compounds with more than 8 carbon atoms were placed in an autoclave with 2000 volume units. Analysis of the discharge stream indicated that there were 2.3 parts by weight of cobalt and 7.5 parts by weight of tributylphosphine in the discharge stream. The pH of the solution was lowered by adding 33.1 parts by weight of octanoic acid. By a subsequent treatment in accordance with the procedure of Example 1 using 100 0 C and a Kohlenmonoxyddrucks of 85 atmospheres for a period of 200 minutes, a total of 61% of the originally present in the purge stream cobalt recovered.
The addition of a polar solvent to the analyzer solution drain stream has a beneficial effect on the amount of catalyst recovered. It has been found that such an additive both the Conversion rate of the soluble nonionic catalyst to the less soluble ionic salt as well the formation of the ionic salt increases.
The same amount by weight of a catalyst solution discharge stream according to Example 1 was introduced into each of two autoclaves. The pH of the catalyst solution, measured in 70 percent by volume isopropanol and 30 percent by volume water, was reduced in each case from 10.9 to 7.2 by adding octanoic acid (about 8.8 parts by volume to 100 parts by volume of catalyst solution). 30 percent by volume of methanol was added to one sample, nothing to the other sample. Then each 85 atmospheres Kohienmonoxyd were pressed into the autoclave and the temperature is 100 M utes at 100 0 C. The mixtures were then cooled to 25 ° C. and filtered to recover the ionic salt complex. Analysis of the two precipitates showed that in the sample in which methanol was present, a 93% conversion of the soluble catalyst into the ionic salt complex had taken place and 75% of the cobalt originally present in the sidestream had been recovered. The second sample, without methanol, achieved 85% conversion and 60% recovery. The particles of the ionic salt complex precipitate in all examples were 5 to 10 microns in diameter and 60 to 120 microns in length. This size range is the same for all cooling rates in the range from 0.3 to 5 ° C / min.
