Nuclear reactor fuel rod The present invention relates to a nuclear reactor fuel rod which consists of a filling of U02 tablets within a shell red, res etus zirconium or a zirconium alloy. In the case of fuel rods of this type, at higher operating temperatures there is a risk of oxygen embrittlement of the cladding tube material. The oxygen diffuses from the fuel UO 2 into the zirconium. In the event of changing mechanical stress on the cladding tube material, e.g. with load changes, "Seram" etc., the embrittlement of the cladding tube material can possibly lead to a cladding tube defect This risk of cladding tube embrittlement is eliminated by providing the UO 2 tablets according to the invention at least on their preferably cylindrical outside with a coating of pyrographite of at least 1 / u thickness are provided.
One possibility for applying the pyrographite coating to the uranium dioxide tablets is, for example, to pass methane gas over the UO 2 tablets, which are heated to about 800 ° C. or more, and thus to effect a pyrolytic deposition of graphite on the tablets. ' This deposition should achieve a thickness of at least 1 / lu thickness of the split atom tablets. This surface layer itself acts as a barrier to the escape of oxygen from the UO 2 tablet and forms a zirconium carbide layer on the inside of the cladding tube, which is a reliable protection for the cladding tube material against the diffusion of oxygen. This protective layer tears when the cladding tube is stretched, but it always forms anew. It is also retained, knows -. #. the U02 tablets crumble due to the thermal shock. Its abrasion resistance forms an effective protection against damage to this layer caused by movements of the UO 2 tablets or fragments thereof.
In Figure 1 , a section from a nuclear reactor fuel rod -2 is shown. The cleavage tablets are denoted by 3, their pyrographite envelope is denoted by 31 and the tube is denoted by 4. It is not absolutely necessary that the end faces of the pulp tablets are also covered with pyrographite, since the main protective layer is formed on the inside of the cladding tube 4 during operation of the fuel rod. This protective layer is labeled 41.
FIG. 2 shows a diagram in which the micro-hardness of the casing tube material - in this example alloy Zr / Cu 1.6 - from the first hand zone to a depth of about 200 lu after a lest time of 24 hours and a test temperature of 800 0 C aufist. Curve A shows the hardness profile when using surfaces of the UG 2 tablets protected with pyrographite. It is absolutely constantly low and corresponds to the initial state of the government. The curve 13, on the other hand, shows the hardness profile when using unprotected 110 -, - tablets. From this it can be seen that there is a substantial decrease in hardness in the outer zone of the casing tube material, since the oxygen concentration is strongest in the edge zones interior of the material and hence these n iie microhardness decreases to the same extent, and eventually reaches "We.rt enes corresponding to the output state of the cladding material ent-this graph therefore demonstrates unequivocally the protective effect of the pyrolytic graphite layer on the UO - tablets.
*ZrC bereits merklich in Zr gelt$ot.
auf den UO 2-Tabletten die Schutzwirkung langsam aufhört.2 ') for each application of this method, however, it is limited to fuel rods whose surface temperature is not significantly above 800 ° C., which can only occur in the event of accidents. Beyond this tea # erature limit, ZrC is already noticeably in danger. As a result, coherent zirconium carbides can no longer form on the metal surface, so that after the pyrographite layer on the UO 2 tablets has been consumed, the protective effect slowly ceases.
However, since these cladding tube materials can only be used up to a maximum of 650 ° C. for reasons of strength, this restriction should not be of any practical importance.
thermische Reaktoren bestens eignet.
Finally, it should be mentioned that a deposition of the pyrographite from the gas phase would of course also be possible on the cladding tube material itself, but that this process cannot be carried out because of the hydrogen released and the associated hydrogen embrittlement of the cladding material. The pyrographite coatings are not expected to have a disruptive effect in terms of neutron physics, since graphite or carbon are ideally suited as reactor materials for thermal reactors. In this context, it should not only be mentioned that similar effects can of course also be achieved with other carbon-containing coatings on the cleavage tablets, * such as UG. In addition, this diffusion barrier can also be used with advantage for fuel rods with other oxygen-containing nuclear fuels.
