Auch nimmt durch diesen Zusatz der Brechungsindex höhere Werte an.The prior art includes La 2 O 3 -ThO 2 borate glasses with refractive indices> 1.96 and high contents of tantalum oxide and niobium oxide. Furthermore, glasses are known which are free from niobium oxide but have a high content of tantalum oxide. Finally, glasses are also described that contain neither tantalum oxide nor niobium oxide in their composition. However, these glasses have a low refractive index and can only be melted within narrow limits. The glass area can be greatly expanded by introducing tantalum oxide and niobium oxide. With this addition, the refractive index also takes on higher values.
Although tantalum oxide is by far the most expensive batch component It was previously believed that these well-known glasses contained tantalum oxide to be able to obtain crystallization-stable glasses.
Es sind auch bereits optische Gläser des Systems La2O3-B2O3 bekanntgeworden, in denen wahlweise einGehaltvonThO2, TiO2, Ta2O5 oder Nb2O5möglich ist. Diese bekannten Gläser enthalten jedoch hohe Mengen an CdO, bzw., als völligen oder partiellen Ersatz für CdO, größere Mengen an BaO.Optical glasses of the La 2 O 3 -B 2 O 3 system have also already become known in which a content of ThO 2 , TiO 2 , Ta 2 O 5 or Nb 2 O 5 is possible. However, these known glasses contain large amounts of CdO or, as a complete or partial replacement for CdO, larger amounts of BaO.
It has now surprisingly been found that optical glasses in the La 2 O 3 -B 2 O 3 system with a content of Nb 2 O 5 with low dispersion and a relatively high refractive index can be melted completely free of Ta 2 O 5.
The optical glasses according to the invention are nioboxide-containing glasses of the B 2 O 3 -La 2 O 3 -ThO 2 system with low dispersions v <ü = 45.9 to 33.9 and a relatively high refractive index na = 1.817 to 1.851 and are characterized by the following composition :

In the table below are examples of compositions of optical glasses according to the invention listed.
The new glasses are melted in a platinum crucible, refined at 1400 ° C and then 20 minutes at 115o homogenized 0 C with a Platinrührer. The casting takes place at about HOO 0 C in preheated steel molds. The glasses are then slowly cooled in a cooling furnace.
The glasses produced in this way are practically colorless. They have only a slight tendency to crystallize and are more hard than lead glasses with the same refractive indices.
